FOR the second time you publish comments by Judge Hoffman, declaring that cannabis causes brain damage and memory loss (Cannabis man is hung out to dry, The Press, June 21), and for the second time I will inform you that this is nonsense.

Recently scientists at the Nathan S Kline Institute For Psychiatric Research in the United States reported that they could find "no... evidence of cerebral atrophy or loss of white matter integrity" attributable to cannabis use in the brains of frequent adolescent marijuana users (compared to non-using controls) after performing MRI scans and other advanced imaging technology.

Separate studies assessing the cognitive skills of long-term marijuana smokers have also reported no demonstrable deficits.

I can confirm this, as I, after 25 years of cannabis use have had my memory and cognitive functions tested, and was found no different to non-cannabis users.

To criminalise an adult's personal choice to use a substance no more harmful than coffee of his own free will is a farce and a joke.

If there is no victim, there is no crime.

Will this man's house be raided and he be arrested for admitting to breaking the law and for advocating the use of illegal drugs?

Yes if we had a real police force. They'd have been dusting off the battering ram as we type.

Well it would be very easy as the criminal has admitted the offence AND generously given his address.

If there is no victim, there is no crime.

What about the increasing number of road collisions where the driver was found to be under the influence of cannabis?
At least 2 fatal collisions in North Yorkshire this year were reported as such.
What an idiot this guy is. Why do the Press give him space to spout his filth.

I'm a non-user, and think the scientific jury's out on the harmful effects (but that there probably are at least some). Nevertheless, criminalising cannabis just creates problems for no real gain. Before anyone starts on about drug dealers and escalation, if cannabis (and possibly some other drugs) were dispensed by the state, that would largely eliminate illegal drug dealers' activities - no profits for them, who'd buy if chemists were cheaper? - and regulate the quality.

paul in york I take it you would like pub landlords locked up then as advocates of a mind altering drug? One which also kids get hold of. 'Rust never sleeps' The police are welcome to batter my door down if they so choose I've had many letters published and have been standing on york market with a stall selling cannabis products for 5 years. I do not advocate the use of any drugs to children, including alcohol and tobacco, what I do want is for the authorities to stop spouting rubbish about cannabis. This in particular is one of the problems of prohibition. Kids do not believe what they are being told about drugs in general. in particular the exaggerated claims about the harmfulness of cannabis and it's prohibition are one of the main reasons we have the terrible drug problems we do.

The government has been told this in at least 5 reports during it's ten years in power.

cannabis is substantially less harmful than both tobacco and alcohol, why should adults be threatened with their doors being kicked in for using it in the privacy of their own homes?

what about all your cannabis smoking friends and aquaintences( of which there will be many) Do you wish this upon them?

Drugs are and always have been part of our lives, every culture in evry country on the planet uses them and always have done prohibition is a failure and in fact has made things worse, most of you are simply burying your heads in the sand and clearly know very little about the subject, maybe you should come and visit me on newgate market wednesday friday saturday or sunday you might learn something or maybe you just want to keep your heads in the sand?

Well written arguements Steve, I only hope they educate some of the people on these forums. Cannabis is far less harmful than tobacco or alcohol. There is no justification for the prosecution of adults for it's use. A total waste of public money which also leads to the prosecution of sick people who use cannabis to aleviate crippling pain.

Cannabis is the least harmful recreational drug on the market, and you cant die from it.

Good arguments Steve.

A small adage is that the drug caffeine is bad for the brain.

And thanks for the invite to visit you at Newgate market but I think I prefer to keep a clear mind.

A clear mind nimrod you do not have,
Your comparisons between cannabis, tobacco and alcohol are absurd. Both alcohol and tobacco kill, cannabis does not, I take it that you have never tried cannabis, so how on earth do you feel you can comment on it's effects? And whatever they may be, why on earth should you feel it neccessary to punish people who use it and harm no-one? The ignorant rubbish you spout is just that ignorance.

And by the way nimrod the cannabis products I sell can also be found in Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco, as well as The Body Shop, and most angling shops! and I would estimate apart from these big names maybe about 1000 other businesses around the country , what are you on?
