Why I don’t watch

EVERY so often I receive letter from an institution called TV Licensing, coaxing me to watch television.

Sometimes they even send a rep round to hard sell the idea, but as I have never yet figured out how to work my car radio, I'm not ready to face another technological challenge.

Hitherto, I have had the best of these one-to-one doorstep encounters, but now the new manager has threatened me with an impending visit from officers of the dauntingly titled York Enforcement Team. With nine heavies to hold me down and two to slip on the 'cuffs, what chance have I got?

My great worry was that after 20 years, I wouldn't be able to catch up on programmes missed. Has the Coronation Street cat retired? Likewise Carol Vorderman? Does Delia still go on about parsley and ground nut-oil? I felt like Rip Van Winkle. Obviously, I needed to consult a TV planner.

Done that! On second thoughts, I'll stick with the court appearance, and chance the £1,000 fine.

Here's a great site with lots of advice for non-TV owners like us who are repeatedly persecuted by these Nazis:

http://www.tvlicensi
ng.biz/

The best thing is to quite simply not respond to any of their letters or threats. If you do, your name is on their database and this makes it easier for them to pursue you in future. Installing anonymous call reject on your home phone line will also stop pestering phone calls, too (as well as a lot of other cold sales calls). This costs £4 a month, but is worth every penny. Bear in mind that cold calls from TV Licensing can be very deceptive: they'll typically begin with 'We're calling with a survey about your TV viewing tastes. Can you tell me what your favourite TV programmes are?'. If you give an answer, they'll use that as evidence to get a search warrant to do your home over.

The BBC is also lobbying hard behind the scenes to have the Wireless Teelgraphy Act changed so that broadband internet comes within its scope. In other words, you'll have to buy a TV licence to have broadband in your home, even if, like me, you have no terrestrial TV. The way they should be dealing with this is to require viewers to enter their licence number in order to download BBC programmes, not force internet users to pay the BBC for permission to use other websites. It's bad enough that TV viewers have to pay them for permission to watch their rivals' broadcasting. The sooner that bunch of loony left, dumbing-down fat cats are privatised and given their P45s, the better.

What a lot of people don't realise is it's not illegal to own a TV without having a TV license. It's only illegal if you watch or record live TV broadcasts (including those broadcast over satellite and the internet).

As Guy Fawkes said, the site above has lots of useful information, but to be safe, find the TV Licensing law on the internet, print it out and highlight the relevant areas the next time the TV Gestapo come visit your house as the last one I spoke to didn't seem to know the law he was "enforcing".

I hate the current nasty Gestapo advert' about having everyone's address in their database. I have always had a license but the tone of that advert' sends shivers down my spine. The sooner the BBC is privatised the better.

We have a TV But the amount they chareg considering their advertising income ETC is ridiculous. How do other TV channels bring out similar if not better quality TV content without getting the BBC subsidy which promotes a shower of sh*te.

If anything the BBC should have a charge similar to that of sky, lets see how many people think the channels justify the £140 cost once that kicks in.
