How do you make a difference?

THERE’S a story about JFK in the early pioneering days of space travel research.

He was said to visit Cape Canaveral to meet with all the scientists, researchers and administrators who were working together to make the dream of landing on the moon possible. On his way back to his limousine, he came across a man quietly and purposefully mopping floors.

Although it was pretty obvious what he was actually doing, the president politely asked him: “And what do you do here at the Cape?” The proud response was: “I’m doing the same as everyone else here sir...I’m working to put a man on the moon”.

I know many people who in these challenging times have taken jobs that aren’t exactly what they wish for themselves – out of financial necessity, redundancy or business failure or simply because they recognise that their career dream won’t happen unless they take the first step and show willing.

And I also know people who have no particular aspiration to do anything other than what they do, but are in a job that can often be mundane, routine and frustrating – if they let it be.

Remembering that everyone makes a difference and that all work contributes to the community and to the world can be the thing that keeps you smiling.

And the biggest difference may well be to yourself. Life (and work) is too short not to feel valued and happy.

Find out today exactly how you make a difference.
