ALMOST 200 jobs are being created with the opening of a massive new store in York next week.
The Range - claimed to be "England's answer to IKEA" - stands on the site of the former Asda store at Huntington, which has lain empty for the past five years.
But managing director Chris Dawson said at 150,000 square ft, the home and leisure store is more than double the size of the 61,000 square ft old supermarket.
He warned today that its opening on Saturday December 9 might generate traffic congestion in the area, as customers flocked to visit.
"When we opened a store at Bournemouth last week, the traffic jams were so big the police helicopter had to be called out," he said.
"We are expecting people to travel up to 100 miles to get to the store, from as far away as Middlesbrough, Hull and Bridlington."
He said more than 100 people had tried to walk into the store, thinking it had already opened, and this had generated health and safety concerns.
"We even had someone trying to come in with a pushchair," he said.
"We have had to take on extra security staff to ensure no one comes in before we open. We are pleased people want to come in, but would ask them to wait until we are open."
Mr Dawson said the store was creating 180 jobs, three-quarters of them full-time. The extra jobs come at a good time for York, after a bleak run of redundancy announcements including 645 at Nestl Rowntree, 450 at Norwich Union and more than 100 at British Sugar.
Mr Dawson said the company had invested £4.7 million in the building.
"We have built a mezzanine floor, and a big extension where there will be a garden centre selling specialist plants from all over the world.
"We will have 16 departments, selling everything including homeware, furniture, arts and crafts, camping and garden products, DIY items, textiles, lighting, rugs and pet items."
He said the Range had its roots in the markets of the southwest, where he began trading in 1980.
The company's first superstore opened in Plymouth in 1989, and had been expanding rapidly across the country in recent years. "It concentrates on the home and garden from the lifestyle angle, rather than the DIY angle, aiming to become a one-stop shop for "mid-price" home and garden products. We are England's answer to IKEA."
He thanked the employment service for providing the company with assistance in recruiting staff, and City of York Council for its help.
"Other cities ought to take a leaf out of York's book," he said.
