TWO people were injured and a man arrested after two cars collided on a major road near York, causing traffic chaos.

The casualties, both of whom were suffering from minor injuries, were taken to York Hospital after the collision between a Mazda 6 and a BMW on the A59, between Green Hammerton and York.

Police arrested the driver of the BMW, a 21-year-old man.

Police, two ambulances and two fire engines were sent to the crash.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said it was not clear how the crash happened, and that the circumstances surrounding the accident were being investigated.

The spokesman was also unable to confirm the number of people involved in the smash, which happened at the Tockwith junction, at about 6.30am yesterday.

Both eastbound carriageways of the A59 were closed for about two hours after the crash while the emergency services cleared up debris.

"There was a lot of traffic congestion. The A59's obviously a busy road at that time of the morning," the spokesman said.

The spokesman said it was possible that a further two cars - a Vauxhall Vectra and a Fiat Punto - had also been involved in the collision.

Elsewhere, a woman was left shaken after being involved in a two-car collision at Copmanthorpe, near York. No one was injured in the smash, which happened in Horseman Drive at about 10.40am yesterday.

KEEP IT DECENT

It is only a few weeks since the comments facility was fully restored to stories on this website. Already it is being abused with obscene, racist, cruel and downright nasty comments from an ignorant minority.

If you have a point to make please keep it within the bounds of decency expected on a community newspaper website. We do not want to shut it down again and deprive the sensible majority of their right to express a point of view.

Well spotted Stevieg, I'm sure there will be a 'flood' of further comments.

The A59 SHOULD have 2 eastbound carriageways and 2 westbound ones too. Then there probably wouldn't be so many accidents on it.
Not to mention a proper ring road with dual carriageways.
