Ladies take centre stage at Knavesmire

THERE was many a splendid hat to be seen at York Races' Ladies Day - and there was even the odd tattoo on display as well.

Glamour was the order of the second day, Dante Day, and men and women alike were dressed suitably flamboyantly for the occasion.

There were women in multi-coloured outfits, men wearing red shoes and even a Crocodile Dundee look-a-like.

One woman racegoer caught the eye, with a glitzy dress complemented by a large, intricate tattoo on her arm.

There was a celebrity showing at the races when Coronation Street ladies Tina O'Brien (Sarah Platt) and Samia Smith (Maria Sutherland) flashed up on the big screen.

The weather on the opening day had been wet, but yesterday waterproof jackets were few and far between for much of the day - people were even eating ice cream.

When the racing began, the noise from the stands - packed with thousands of spectators - rose to a roar as the horses thundered along the final straight.

In between the races, stylishly-dressed race-goers sipped champagne and Pimms while a three-piece band - complete with tuxedo-clad players - added to the festival atmosphere.

A feeling of relaxation hung in the air - men in suits leaned casually over the race barriers, and groups of distinguished ladies chatted casually under marquees.

There was a local victory when Blythe Knight - trained by John Quinn, of Settrington, near Malton - won the Bank of Scotland Corporate Hambleton Stakes at odds of 9-1.

Frankie Dettori came first in the main race of the day, the Dante Stakes, riding Authorized.

There was a strong showing of ladies, some wearing the most modest of hats, others resplendent affairs.

Louise Lane, 43, of Guiseley, near Leeds, said: "I got my hat especially for the races from Aleda, in Guiseley. I'm here with my best friend and eight ladies and we came in a pink limousine. We're going to have a great time."

Val Cook, 46, of Thornton-le-Dale, said: "My hat came from Get-a-Head Hats, in Scarborough. I'm here with friends - it's a girls' day out! I'm having a great time. I come every year."

Frankie swaps silks for decks

JOCKEY Frankie Dettori was playing records instead of setting them when he took to the DJ stand at a York nightclub.

Dettori celebrated a winning start to Knavesmire's new season by giving clubbers at BPM bar, in Rougier Street, a treat with his impromptu musical session.

Chris Lee, manager at BPM, said: "Frankie turned a few heads when he came through the doors - I think quite a few people had backed his winner that afternoon. He seemed to really enjoy himself.

"Frankie loves his music and when the opportunity came for him to play live he jumped at the chance - proving that as well as a fine jockey, he's not a bad disc jockey either!"

KEEP IT DECENT

It is only a few weeks since the comments facility was fully restored to stories on this website. Already it is being abused with obscene, racist, cruel and downright nasty comments from an ignorant minority.

If you have a point to make please keep it within the bounds of decency expected on a community newspaper website. We do not want to shut it down again and deprive the sensible majority of their right to express a point of view.

Get some perspective Mr Harmless Flutter.

well done Harmless, this is a story about horse racing.
However, as Jesus said, more PEOPLE die every year than horses.
Jesus was also trying to make a point that before you get flustered about horses, there are people dying too. These horses are specially bred to race. I dont believe people are specially bred to starve to death.

Yes, I agree, mankind urgently needs to look at our farming methods, DIET and the environment - big stuff and there are lots of groups and online forums about these topics.

Meanwhile, as far as horse racing is concerned,

Horses have been bred progressively for lighter (and therefore weaker) bones. The weaker bones that result may shatter when animals hammer into a hurdle at speed, or stumble and fall on the flat.

375 horses are literally raced to death every year.

Horse racing
You bet, it kills.

Why do the animal fiddling tree hugging nutballs always turn it into a debate about the animals? Horse racing is intrinsically safe for both the rider and horse alike. Why not tell us how many race horses a years retire and live long gentle lives? I bet it runs into the 1000s

Bl00dy hippies make me sick.

All those horses dying, just for pure enjoyment and a 'harmless flutter'? People just don't think about it.

I am sure you have given people something to think about stating about all these horses as if people were not bothered they would not retaliate like the people do on here.

Oh those that are bothered about the amount of people that starve, have you tried giving meat up? As it takes one acre of grain to feed one cow, which used to be imported from africa, and it take a lot less grain to feed an acre full of people, so go veggie it helps those who are starving by a long way!

Horse Racing and Vivisection.

EXPOSED! Race Horse Vivisection

The race-going public are mostly unaware of the painful and often lethal laboratory experiments conducted on race horses, mountain ponies and other equines. Many of the experiments are directly, or indirectly, funded by racing industry bodies, such as the Horserace Betting Levy Board.

A recent report that comes directly from the researchers’ own accounts that have been published in equine veterinary and other scientific journals, describe horses being deliberately infected with devastating viruses; pregnant animals undergoing abdominal surgery and subsequently aborting their young; other pregnant animals being deliberately underfed; and newborn foals subjected to stress experiments. Most of the ‘procedures’ end with the horses being killed and their tissues examined.

The declared aim of the experiments is to understand why race horses damage their limbs and suffer other illnesses - and to deliver remedies. A principal practitioner of this black art is the Animal Health Trust, a veterinary charity based in Newmarket, the home of horseracing. Professor W R ‘Twink’ Allen, of Cambridge University’s Equine Fertility Unit, was involved in several of the experiments. Allen was reported to have produced the world’s first test-tube foals and is now engaged in horse cloning experiments.
His son-in-law is jockey Frankie Dettori.

Approximately 15,000 foals are born into the British and Irish racing industries each year, and then only a third go on to become racers. Those horses who do not make the grade may be slaughtered for meat or repeatedly change hands in a downward spiral of neglect. Of those horses who do go on to race, around 375 are raced to death every year.

Beneath its glamorous, 'older lady pretending to be young' façade, commercial horse racing is a ruthless industry motivated by financial gain and prestige. Cruelty? You can bet on it!
