FIFTY motorists were caught speeding in two hours in a village near York.

Police said Operation Siren, a joint road safety campaign organised by local emergency services and the Hambleton Community Safety Partnership, was taken to Sutton-On-The-Forest.

The campaign was launched after an increasing number of drivers were caught speeding through the county's villages.

Results showed that more than two thirds of drivers entering Sutton were travelling at speeds averaging 46mph, despite the village having a 30mph limit.

Drivers caught speeding by police during Operation Siren were given two options to help them see the error of their ways: the standard £60 fixed penalty ticket, with three points added to their licence or the alternative of spending 20 minutes being educated on the dangers of bad driving.

A spokesman said that, over a period of two hours, 50 drivers were caught breaking the limit through Sutton and the vast majority opted for the educational route, with only six choosing the fixed penalty.

Local officers from each of the emergency services gave talks about their experiences of dealing with the consequences of breaking the speed limit. A film was also shown depicting graphic images of road accidents which added to the shock value of the campaign.

Almost 100 drivers have been caught speeding during Operation Siren over the last month. Police are hoping the crackdown will discourage anti-social driving.

Nice one. Well done. It is one of the worst roads for speeding. Shame only a few points were given out but good nontheless.

These mobile speed trap are a very good idea and much more effective than fixed cameras.
I agree there should be more than a few points given to offenders. At least 6 points and then if they are caught twice they would loose his/her licence for say aT LEAST 6 months.

An earlier report suggests that deprivation of driving licence for an indeterminate period is being unlawfully imposed by the police.

They should be given the option of a fine and points or education and points.
Sitting through a 20 minute lecture alone is little more than a slap on the wrist!

They still are able to drive even if the police have the licence. The majority of people don't take their licences when they drive. They may have the ID bit but not the counterpart, so where is the problem?

Shipton by Beningbrough should be the next port of call for the speed cameras, the A19 that runs through is like a race track for wagons.

Once again I have to say sorry to all the cop bashers out there in Press land but I'm with them again on this one.

With one exception - and that is ALL speeding offenders should be given a fixed penalty ticket.

And so what if it takes a little longer for their endorsed licence to be returned?

I agree , they should be dishing out the points and not offering alternatives. Haviing points on your licence is a **** good deterrent not to re-offend ( well at least for 3 years) a 20 minute lecture will be forgotton the next day. We wern't talking a couple of mph over here - an AVERAGE of 46mph that's 50% over the speed limit. Dish out the points.

What some people can not realise is that travelling at 45mph in a 30mph limit is the same as doing 105mph on the A64!

Us humans are only made to travel at 5mph max. Our brains can not really comprehend anything higher, hence the amount of collisions we are invovled in.

Points all the time coupled with a fine, which is % of your earnings. They do that in Finland, hence when Kimi the racing driver got pulled last year he had a whopping fine. Those Merc/BMW drivers would slow down then!!!

so where is the problem?

In relation to anything where you are required to produce a driving licence such as hiring a car, or even to drive abroad.

I must say i think the police have handled this very well for a change and a few motorists will have gone away thinking about what the concequences of their actions could have been instead of that the police had nothing better to do than raise a few more coffers for thr jar,and lets face it speeding was never much of a priority until they were allowed to keep the proceeds raised by cameras.
As for 45mph in a 30mph been as serious as 105mph on the A64,i would have thought any rightminded motorist would see it as much more serious after all no child is going to step out on front of you on the A64.100+mph is quite safe on such roads as the A64 in the right conditions as anyone who uses our motorway network on a regular basis will agree, but hey if you want to go for the heavyhanded approach we could always lock em up and throw away the key.

Bemused, you are an ill informed, narrow minded, ignorant ****. Historically, you moan about the police, the council, the nhs, the world. You care not about the honest, hard workers within these organisations. So long as you get to air your point, your happy. Do something positive. Support them. Speak to thier bosses. The M.P's we vote. Do it.

Having to resort to personal abuse are you? looks as if I'm on the right tracks.

Quite correct, if they were doing their jobs I'd have no complaints. I (and millions of others) pay their wages and not unreasonably expect them to be up to their jobs.

Have you ever tried complaining to the police, the council, the NHS, and our bloody useless waste of a vote MP?

Thought not, or you'd realise there's more than one way to skin a cat, and comments on forums such as this can really hit home.

What planet is plastic terry on? clearly not the same as this one. The report was about Sutton on Forest and he refers to Sutton on Derwent? and where the heck does he get HIS hair done, Mars?

A cracking advert for staying away from wherever it is...

Like ranger I would like to know the percentage of locals caught speeding in sutton on the forest.I also think that anyone of those caught doing 40 or over should have had a ticket straight away AND forced to have the educational talk.Speeding in the villages is a big problem

They would have to be more effective - especially since there are no fixed cameras in North Yorks.

i think we need more of these speed traps everywhere in the country, as the economy begins to faulter our government must find new ways of taxing the average folk.
