Fund our force

TODAY The Press launches its Fund Our Force Campaign as MPs from across the political divide come together to issue a single unified message to the Government.

As revealed exclusively by this paper, proposals by the Home Office could see £10 million slashed off North Yorkshire's police budget - the equivalent of 300 officers.

We are calling on Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to ensure police retain adequate funding.

Now Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs across the county have set aside their political differences to express their concerns. York MP Hugh Bayley said: "I would fight cuts to policing in North Yorkshire tooth and nail."

Why don't NYPD use some of the massive profits they've amassed?

I don't think it works like that, all "profits" if indeed that is the correct word for "fine" goes to a central pot and is distrubted through the force as required.

If you refer to the recent reported stockpile of unused budget, I believe that was allocated elsewhere the moment after it was discovered.

If Nomadic is referring to fines from the various campaigns against law-breaking motorists, that money goes straight to central Government, the same as fines imposed at Court - it doesn't go to NYP. If he's referring to the reserves, that money is already allocated for various major projects. If anybody bothered to read the leaflets that come out with the council tax bills, for years before Della Cannings, NYP was trumpeted as having the lowest police precept of all the forces in the region. What that actually meant was years and years of under investment in things such as buildings, IT systems and equipment. Della may not have been everybody's cup of tea but she started the process of dragging NYP into the 21st Century. For example, the surrounding forces have some very impressive custody facilities. At peak periods like weekends, does Nomadic want NYP's police officers out on the street or would he prefer them to continue spending their time ferrying prisoners around the county because there isn't enough cell space in places like York?

Cutting funding is not the way forward and does not improve services. The experience of the NHS in the past few years stands as testament to this. The police are already stretched enough as it is; the government should be driving to reduce bureaucracy and improve professionalism rather than focusing their efforts on this.

Back this campaign.

After reading this story I felt so deeply sorry that poor mr policeman cant have his new subaru impreza turbo undercover police car that i have donated 10p to the cause.

IMO The police should be out on the streets working, not driving around in sports cars looking to make some money from a fixed penaly ticket.

I dont believe that they should lose such a significant amount of funding but if it isnt being spent properly in the first place then i have limited sympathy

It's clear that the existing reserves have already been earmarked and any reduction in government funding means extra costs for us or less policing.
This campaign is exactly what a local paper should be doing.
It won't make any difference though.

Same problem as in the USA. So much money thrown away on the Iraq situation there is little left over for the important items. Bush and Blair should be tried for crimes against humanity.

Just posted something saying this is what the Press should be doing, although it won't work.
It hasn't appeared so stuff em

akuma, York says...

The site isn't actively monitored by an admin, you can find this in the term and conditions of use.

It's run by an external company who merely facilitate it remaining up and running.

If you post at lunch time when most people are on your comments will be qued before they appear, usually this happens straight away, but when it's busy it can take X number of seconds or minutes.

Remember its a free site so the servers not going to be state of the art, I think a bit of patients is in order.

The Press should be ashamed of removing the justifiably critical comments on that thread. It's a denial of freedom speech on a most important issue. More and more do I think we live in what is becoming a Stalinist dictatorship.

Well, bemused,if the argument is that the country is being run by a government that is increasingly Stalinist, then the assumption must be that stalinist methods of surveillance would be employed, and the intelligence garnered acted upon. So far I haven`t heard of anyone being dragged off for making subversive comments on public forums like this one, so it follows you are talking rubbish again.

Well North Yorkshire Police would do better if they did not waste money on things like a £28,000.00 new shower for the Chief Comestible and you can be guaranteed that any job losses will be among the patrolling officers and not the paper pushers who are over paid for what they do you will see very few above the rank of inspector be made jobless

i am fed up of hearing about the 75% increase. The amount of the precept is pretty low, its 75% of that. Yes, it sounds a huge amount but isnt - as already covered above, this money has been earmarked for investment in things that were let slide whilst the authority actually boasted about having the lowest precept in the country.
Yes also to the fact it will be the pcs whos positions will go - but not by being sacked more like wont refill posts as more leave/retire. All that means is a throwback to the numbers of the 70s but with 2007 crime rates.
And I have seen POLICE OFFICERS outside the city ( no, they werent PCSO's ) its just that there arent a lot of them no matter what the likes of the chief and bigwigs say! so cutting down on "not a lot" leaves - less!
