A North Yorkshire MP has attacked the Government for allowing US ballistic missile defence equipment to be housed at the county's RAF Menwith Hill base.

Phil Willis has co-sponsored a motion in the House of Commons, calling for a full and open debate on the issue.

He said: "Tony Blair had promised an open debate and now Gordon Brown has decided to make the decision behind closed doors and announced it quietly rather than telling MPs directly.

"The people of Harrogate and Knaresborough his constituency deserve to be considered when making this decision and their feelings represented in an open debate."

On Saturday, about 100 protesters took part in a demonstration at the base. Among them were York's two Green Party councillors Andy D'Agorne and Dave Taylor.

What is his problem?

If the Yanks want to spend Billions of Dollars (that our country can't afford) on a cracking missile defence system and install it here, meaning we benefit from it for FREE, then that can only be a good thing.

How stupid are these councillors?

Its a defence system for the yanks, not for us . It now makes us in North Yorkshire a target.. Pity they dont build it in Westminster.......

Yes it's primarily for the Yanks, but there hardly going to stand around scratching there backsides if they see a missile coming our way.

We are no more of a target with it, than without it.

Like it or not we are America's servants, they go to war, so do we.

Before anyone starts we ARE much better off that way.

We enjoy unchallenged trade routes and unlimited military support when we get back into corners as well as a host of other luxuries, being best friend with the worlds biggest superpower does have advantages.

And were,s the yanks missiles going to be based. If it aint in this country, the lead time is to long for the yanks to anything about it. Apart from look after themselves. They dont give a sh*t about us.

Of course they'll be in this country, but they're hardly going to let us, the press or the Muppet councillors know where they are located, or even hint they exist.

If they did you have some moron protestors trying to camp out atop the launch silo's.

Er hello wake up people! There is NO thats NO agreement for the shield to protect us. It is only for the USA not us!We did a bad deal here.
Funny how the MP has no objection to them listening in to our phone calls or allowing the USA to tap our business lines giving American companies an advantage. This happened to BAE against Boeing once.

Do Daz and Ouserower realise that there is a front line RAF base at Leeming and one of the largest troop garrisons at Catterick. I'll bet any future enemy won't know about those targets will they?
Not to mention the nuclear weapons stores, wherever they are. Deterrence has worked since the 1950's. Its only the scaremongering tree huggers who can't see that.
