COUNCIL diggers have cut through power cables in York twice in the past year, causing power cuts and sparking special investigations.
The first occurred last December and the second in April of this year, a report to ruling City of York councillors states.
Measures to avoid such accidents have now been stepped up, while electricity bosses have provided the authority with a complete, detailed map of all power lines in the city, to try to prevent any recurrence.
Terry Collins, director of neighbourhood services at the council, said today: "Both incidents were reported to the Health and Safety Executive and the council's health and safety team carried out a detailed internal investigation in both cases."
In the first incident, a council worker was using a saw when he cut through a cable in Tennyson Avenue, leading to an "interruption" in the power supply.
The worker was taken to hospital and checked over, but sustained no injuries.
The second incident was four months later in Hatfield Walk, Acomb, when someone using a "petrol-driven breaker" hit a cable. Again, the power was interrupted and the worker was uninjured.
The report to councillors said: "Neighbourhood services experienced two incidents of road diggers striking power cables. The procedures we have in place to avoid these type of incidents have now been checked and reinforced. NEDL have also provided the council with a detailed map of all power cable lines, which should effectively address the problem."
A council spokeswoman said: "The description of digger' is perhaps slightly misleading - the incidents involved digging, rather than mechanical diggers."
The report of the accidents was contained in the recent performance and financial monitor, presented to the council's ruling executive.
The April incident saw power disconnected for almost eight hours, and affected between 30 and 60 customers.

Why don't the council workers use cable detectors which are used in the building industry to detect the cables and metal pipes or is it a cost the council don't think is worth doing

So why has the first paragraph in this piece started with 'Council diggers'.
Incidents such as this highlights what has existed for years, and that is the lack of 'joined up' information shared between the utility services and the council.
