POLICE are warning people to be on their guard after a spate of burglaries in York by someone pretending to be a police officer.

In the latest distraction burglary in the city, two men pretending to be plain- clothes police officers asked an elderly man to show them around his home, and stole a purse.

Sergeant Andy Haigh said: "There have been a number of distraction burglaries around the city recently and the ones we are really concerned about involve someone claiming to be a police officer. Someone has said they are a police officer and even shown people a card saying constabulary' on it.

"They are targeting vulnerable elderly people.

"There have been a series of this type of burglaries across the city. A few of them were where the burglars said they were from different companies such as Dyno-Rod and British Gas. Now there have been some where they are saying they are police officers and they have produced a card."

The most recent incident happened in School Lane, Fulford, at about 4.15pm on Wednesday.

Two men are believed to have arrived at the address in a grey estate car and asked the elderly man if they could look round his house.

The man believed they were plain clothes police officers because they showed him the fake identification.

Both thieves are described as being about 25 years old. One was wearing a rugby-style top and the other was wearing a dark sweater.

Sgt Haigh said he believed the thieves had probably come from outside the city to commit the crime.

He said: "We are advising residents to check police officers have warrant cards before they let them in.

"It will have a photograph of the officer on it and details of North Yorkshire Police.

"If they are still not sure then the officer will be quite happy for them to phone the control room on 0845 60 60 247 to check that the officer exists."

He said all officers would also be able to give residents their collar number.

Anyone with information about the School Lane incident is asked to phone Sgt Haigh on 0845 60 60 247.

Meanwhile, in East Yorkshire, police are also asking residents to be vigilant after reports of men gaining entry to homes by claiming to be checking water faults.

Two men arrived at the home of an elderly man in Market Weighton, at 2.25pm on Wednesday, claiming they were from a water company and needed to check the water at the premises.

One suspect went into the bathroom with the man, while the second man entered the property and carried out an untidy search of the house.

The first man is described as white, of thin build, aged between 18 and 25, 5ft 5ins tall, with short dark brown hair. He was wearing dark trousers and a light grey top.

The second man is also described as white, aged between 18 and 25, of a thin build, and may have had an Irish accent. He was wearing a dark top and trousers.

Anyone who may be able to identify the men, or who may have seen them, is asked to phone Humberside police on 0845 60 60 222.

Come on folks PCSO's do have some uses, ok you could agrue that the get paid to much for what they do and may as well just be proper police officers.

But these morons are pretending to be plain clothed police.

I willing to guess they don't respectable and are pretty easy to pick out.

When undercovers come in our pub and do they honey trap thing, you can spot them a mile off!

All you have to do is look out a kid asking for beer, with a 6ft bloke with a backwards cap and short jeans and big heavy stomping boots stood behind them.

They don't blend in well!

Why do you people always seem to use any article about the police as an opportunity to slate them? I'm actually more concerned about the fact the some idiots are going around pretending to do this and targetting vulnerable eldery people. Guess I just care more about the risks posed to the public than I do about getting in a dig about the police at any opportunity possible. I suppose none of you would ever ring the police should you find yourselves a victim a crime??? Hmmm thought so!

No I wouldn't. I have done in the past and all they've done is given me an incident number and that was it. For this reason, it seems pointless calling the police. Unless they are willing to turn up straight away, i find them very unhelpful.

It's a total waste of time doing so. They don't want to know and don't care. CB-Cold is quite right.

I think it's unfair to say they don't want to know and they don't care. True perhaps some don't, but that's not the case for all police officers. My friend was a victim of a violent assault last year and had nothing but praise for the police. Unfortunately people seem to focus on the bad rather than the good. I have a friend who works in the control room at York and you would be amazed by the number of people who abuse the 999 service. One example that springs to mind is someone who dialled 999 to say that they believed someone had thrown a crisp packet into his front garden. If it weren't for time wasters like this and ridiculous Government targets that state all calls should be dealt with then perhaps the police would be able to turn up straight away to a genuine incident. I'm sure CB-Cold and Bemused if you ever found yourselves a victim of a serious crime you would turn to the police. Lets hope none of us ever have to. My car was once stolen and I too was just given an incident number, I don't have any suggestions as to what else they could have done apart from go out in search of my car which in my opinion would have been a waste of time best spent doing something else.

and ridiculous Government targets that state all calls should be dealt with

There is overwhelming evidence in stories appearing on these pages that they deal with hardly any. The idea that there is a "ridiculous Government target that states all calls should be dealt with", is nothing but a joke.

I wouldn't pay much attention to someone working in 'the control room at York'. They are part of the problem by not dealing with calls correctly, at least this is the conclusion I draw when I dial 999 for a genuine reason and it is later denied I ever made the call.

Do you often dial 999 for a 'genuine reason'? I think two many people have different views on what a 999 emergency is, that's where some of the problems lie. I used to work for NYP myself, hence my defence of them in some respects (I've seen an insiders view) and I've seen for myself what people ring 999 for and a lot of them are not emergencies!
I don't think the comments on these pages can reflect the reality of peoples experience with the police across the whole of North Yorkshire.
Like i said previously, people like to focus on the bad rather than the good, which is a shame. Same with the NHS and so on.
