Yobs set fire to disabled woman’s special van

A DISABLED grandmother has been made a prisoner in her own home after thieves tried to steal the van which was her lifeline to the outside world - then set fire to it.

While Christine Stockton slept, vandals were destroying the specially-adapted vehicle she used to visit her family and travel to vital hospital appointments.

With no way of affording a replacement, the 44-year-old says she is now "trapped" in her York home after the attack on her Ford Transit van at the weekend.

Christine, who has been confined to a wheelchair since she was a child, suffers from the severe tissue diseases dermatomyositis and calcinosis, which caused her own body to wreck her muscles as a youngster. She has twice needed emergency treatment to save her life in the last year.

Now any independence she had has been torn away from her after the van, which cost more than £20,000 and was presented to her by ex-Prime Minister John Major 14 years ago, was ravaged by flames.

"I was one of the first people in the country to get this van and it meant I could do the things everybody else does, like drive to the shops or go to the cinema and the seaside with my family, without having to rely on other people," said mother-of-three Christine, of Clifton.

"It was a godsend because it gave me as much independence as I could expect, but all that has gone now because of these people.

"I was in tears when my daughter, Pamela, came to visit me and saw what had happened.

The van has been totally gutted inside and I've been told it's a write-off. Even with insurance, I couldn't afford a new one, which would cost at least £36,000, then have it adapted.

"It's left me trapped in my own home.

"All I can do is stare at the walls and be dependent on other people, which I've never wanted to be. Because of my disability, I can't just travel in ordinary cars, and this means I've had to cancel important hospital appointments in Leeds because I've no way of getting there."

Christine has condemned the arsonists as "scum".

Anybody who saw the attack on or has any information about it should phone PC Julie Hitchcock at York Police on 0845 6040247.

NOT trying to be nasty,
But she has the electric wheelchair and I have seen people getting on the bus in theese.

So she isn't really trapped in her home at the story suggests.

This is a horrible crime, made worse becuase its a person that needs her van to get about, and if they catch the culprits I hope they are punished accordingly.

However she is hardly a prisoner. There are many taxi firms ans specialists organisations that special in wheel chairs access vehicles.

It wont be long before the insurance company repairs or provides a new van.

I wouldn't hold out too much hope, Have you ever tried claiming for a written off vehicle?

She will have a fight on her hands to get
anything near what she needs, whats the trade price of a 14yr old tranny £400 or therabouts.
I am no expert,on Insurance, But I know they will try every trick out there to avoid paying out for the adaptions.

I work for an insurance company, so yes I know how it works.

The company involved can get some cracking good PR if they pull there finger out and help out ASAP.

Free positive advertising for simply doing what they were paid to do in the first place, it an oppertunity made of gold.

They'd be fools to miss it.

I agree with you, the only way these vandals will learn is by a fitting punishment being applied to them.Someone must know who these scum are,do us all a favour and shop them! Regarding comments raised pointing out she can use public transport, yes this is an option but the hassle involved must make it extremely difficult. At least with the van she could be mobile and independant like the vast majority of us without having to depend on our pathetic bus service.

I agree it is a serious inconvenience
using the bus ,But I am sure she could get about locally.

So isn't actually trapped indoors as the story suggests,

I do hope the coppers prioritise this incident.

I suppose the press have to sensationalise the story as usual by claiming she's trapped indoors! I hope the insurance company show a bit of compassion due to her circumstances and sort out a new van soon. As mentioned previously this would be great pr for the insurance company involved.

So let me get this right, it's a 14 year old van, specially adapted for a disabled person and as such would be pretty useless to anyone who wasn't themselves disabled and able to drive the specially adapted controls etc....So how is this of value to any thief really? Even bored kid's must realise a pointless excercise when they see one, or perhaps not, maybe im giving them too much credit here?

So why burn it then? Doesn't make sense if the engie were to order, particularly a 14 year old engine, which would have minimal resale value anyway let alone salvage value, it would be less hassle to go to a scrappers.

do not condone the mindless vandalism at all but
a. disable people get a large chunk of cash each and every month called DLA that is meant to be used to pay for their transport etc.
b. she can get a specially adapted vehicle on motability, that she will be entitle to, for free and delivered in a matter of weeks..

Disable people are just part of society and the genuine ones just want to be treated the same as any ordinary person and not singled out for special treatment.

I took a look in last night ,don't ask me why?
I am bored of all this but there are a couple of other idiots that have nothing better to do than to post crap about me,thinking they will offend.
Its a shame they have removed some, people would then see what I am up against.

I agree it is a serious inconvenience using the bus ,But I am sure she could get about locally. So isn't actually trapped indoors as the story suggests, I do hope the coppers prioritise this incident. I know it depends on the particular PC that is assigned to the case.
Getting around locally is not the issue here.

I feel incredibly sorry for this woman. She's been confined to a wheelchair for most of her life and her independence has been halted. Added to which she's been the victim of a crime which is upsetting in itself.
This vehicle was 14 years old and, although it's an old banger to most, it was hers and what it stood for is the point here.

Public transport is a nonsense for able bodied people. Presuming a bus even turns up and her wheelchair can cope, I can fully understand why she feels so trapped.

Sarah/jk - i have to say you bring it on yourself. You say you took a look in last night, thats what you do every night! Maybe some people have just got bored listening to what you have to say, maybe you should give other people a chance and not always dispute other peoples opinion.

NOT trying to be nasty,
But she has the electric wheelchair and I have seen people getting on the bus in theese.

So she isn't really trapped in her home at the story suggests.

Sarah, it seems you have been a little too strong on this one.
'Fly-by-night' was as well though.

Sarah, not that this is the place but for Sat Nav:

http://www.ebuyer.co
m/product/131342

£76 for a decent one that even plays MP3s but if you MUST have a TomTom which everyone insists on:

"This price is available at PC World stores via Pricematching either Dixons or Amazon who have it for £129.98. PC World will also give an additional £2 off due to their Pricematch terms "If you find it cheaper at any well known retailer or website we will refund the difference plus 10%". Final price is £127.98."

http://www.pcworld.c
o.uk

(Both deals shamelessly pinched from www.hotukdeals.com)

To get back on topic, I know myself how annoying it is to even have your car broken in to, to have your main mode of transportation (and that includes walking) to be taken away must be devastating.

Thanks baffled,

Niceguy I didn't get a little to strong as you put it on the story itself,I am disgusted that the idiot/s have wrecked her van.

But the comments I received last night. Re,being a slapper ,having smelly rancid underwear though not insulting (or correct for that matter, lol),I felt were totally unecessary, and I am bored with it.

I don't take offence easily, and NEVER from any anonymous Idiot.

Its not always easy to ignore people doing there upmost to P!ss you off,
I am doing my best to ignore them,But If I see anymore unecessary remarks about my personal life ,I will report them as I said its boring.
I don't give a toss if the comments facility is pulled alltogether, because it has become silly.

I used to come here to read the stories rather than wasting 40p buying the press,
But when you get posters calling disabled people mongies etc, You kind off get drawn into it,by disgust.

So what exactly do you know about me. I will tell you a bit if you like

Please don't. It will only annoy people even more. And you haven't had anything interesting to say so far.

I have kicked someone in the head, it was well worth the £25 fine, got loads of freebies from probation services far exceeding the compo

Are you for real? I trust you're proud of yourself?

you have said too much tonight, you gave the game away.
Revert to your sloppy daytime ID save yourself the trouble,

What game? WTF are you talking about? I don't have any other ID, unlike some I suspect. This seems an obsession with you. As I said before, try to get a proper life and stop pontificating and parading your nasty, bigotted, & uneducated views here. There are a host of chat-rooms for people like you - dummi!
