A DISABLED grandmother has been made a prisoner in her own home after thieves tried to steal the van which was her lifeline to the outside world - then set fire to it.
While Christine Stockton slept, vandals were destroying the specially-adapted vehicle she used to visit her family and travel to vital hospital appointments.
With no way of affording a replacement, the 44-year-old says she is now "trapped" in her York home after the attack on her Ford Transit van at the weekend.
Christine, who has been confined to a wheelchair since she was a child, suffers from the severe tissue diseases dermatomyositis and calcinosis, which caused her own body to wreck her muscles as a youngster. She has twice needed emergency treatment to save her life in the last year.
Now any independence she had has been torn away from her after the van, which cost more than £20,000 and was presented to her by ex-Prime Minister John Major 14 years ago, was ravaged by flames.
"I was one of the first people in the country to get this van and it meant I could do the things everybody else does, like drive to the shops or go to the cinema and the seaside with my family, without having to rely on other people," said mother-of-three Christine, of Clifton.
"It was a godsend because it gave me as much independence as I could expect, but all that has gone now because of these people.
"I was in tears when my daughter, Pamela, came to visit me and saw what had happened.
The van has been totally gutted inside and I've been told it's a write-off. Even with insurance, I couldn't afford a new one, which would cost at least £36,000, then have it adapted.
"It's left me trapped in my own home.
"All I can do is stare at the walls and be dependent on other people, which I've never wanted to be. Because of my disability, I can't just travel in ordinary cars, and this means I've had to cancel important hospital appointments in Leeds because I've no way of getting there."
Christine has condemned the arsonists as "scum".
Anybody who saw the attack on or has any information about it should phone PC Julie Hitchcock at York Police on 0845 6040247.

A DISABLED grandmother has been made a prisoner in her own home after thieves tried to steal the vanThis is a horrible crime, made worse becuase its a person that needs her van to get about, and if they catch the culprits I hope they are punished accordingly. However she is hardly a prisoner. There are many taxi firms ans specialists organisations that special in wheel chairs access vehicles. It wont be long before the insurance company repairs or provides a new van.

So let me get this right, it's a 14 year old van, specially adapted for a disabled person and as such would be pretty useless to anyone who wasn't themselves disabled and able to drive the specially adapted controls etc....So how is this of value to any thief really? Even bored kid's must realise a pointless excercise when they see one, or perhaps not, maybe im giving them too much credit here?

I am bored of all this but there are a couple of other idiots that have nothing better to do than to post crap about me,thinking they will offend. Its a shame they have removed some, people would then see what I am up against.Sarah/jk - i have to say you bring it on yourself. You say you took a look in last night, thats what you do every night! Maybe some people have just got bored listening to what you have to say, maybe you should give other people a chance and not always dispute other peoples opinion.
