CCTV cameras are set to be installed at a York car park, to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour.

Traders and residents have called for cameras at the car park at the corner of Bishopthorpe Road and Scarcroft Road.

Local councillor Sandy Fraser said: "The area with the benches at the corner of Bishopthorpe Road and Scarcroft Road is, at times, the focus for youths congregating. There have been incidents of vandalism and a boundary wall has had to be rebuilt. It also attracts street drinkers on occasions."

The matter will be considered by City of York Council's city strategy panel next week. Work is already in progress to install CCTV at the car park, while the council's waste strategy team is to investigate moving recycling bins to another area of the car park, as their location has helped people gain illegal access to properties.

I give them a day before they're broken if they manage to install them!

hmm interesting that they should choose to put the cctv up in one of the cheaper car parks in York, used solely by locals and one where wardens rarely bother you if youve left it there for five minutes with no ticket while picking up a pizza or otherwise..... which way will the camera's be focusing again?

of course it will, it always does unfortunately.

Any bets on where they take up station next, down by the knavesmire possibly? Some posh houses down there so they will be moved on quicker than normal no doubt, then it's round on to tad road then either up the mount or round holgate

Seems like a knee-jerk response to me. Not all the young people who gather in this area are drinking or being anti-social - they're just hanging out - why not invest in a youth shelter instead of cameras. Any street drinking that does occur is reinforced by the cheap booze on sale in bargain booze, jacksons and other local stores. It's unfair to soley blame young people.

cameras in the St Johns car park doesn't seem to put off the drug dealers at the back of the health centre or at the back of the row of shops on Lord Mayors walk.

The money would be better spent by policing the car park with the real police, not those plastic coppers you see riding on the buses and serving no purpose at all.

What a sensible comment with someone thinking positively for once.

Good point. If young people had something to do and somewhere to go they wouldn't need to hang around car parks. Although it has to be said that a lot of young people will hang around drinking if they get the opportunity - isn't that what we all did when we were too young to go out? Its part of growing up, hanging round the park or wherever drinking cider!!
