Action to boost school dinners

EDUCATION chiefs in North Yorkshire are examining ways to increase the number of pupils eating school dinners.

North Yorkshire County Council's young people overview and scrutiny committee is meeting on Friday to discuss an action plan to boost the uptake, which for the current academic year stands at 41.8 per cent.

The action comes despite this figure remaining stable over the last two years and it comparing very favourably with the percentage of pupils eating school meals in York.

The Press reported last week that less than a third of York's schoolchildren are eating school dinners. The school meal take-up rate in the city has dropped to 32.5 per cent.

This represents a gradual declining trend since 2003-4, when more than 38 per cent of children were eating school meals in the city. The percentage of primary schoolchildren taking a school meal in the city dropped to 31 per cent during last year's summer term, and then rose in the autumn term to 32.5 per cent. Traditionally school meal uptake is low during the summer term, when pupils often favour packed lunches.

But the figures still represent a significant downturn, at a time when the Government is introducing a new national performance indicator on school meal uptake from April 2008.

The North Yorkshire young people overview and scrutiny committee has completed a review of the school meals provision and concluded that its in-house catering service provided a good all-round service.

It is looking at four options: to maintain the current service; to increase the number of transported meals; to explore the option of regenerated frozen meals or to pass the responsibility on to schools. In North Yorkshire, North Yorkshire County Caterers has been the provider of the school meals service for some time.

They provide meals for 316 primary schools and 31 secondary schools across the county or 3,415,200 meals in the last academic year - representing a 42 per cent uptake.

However, the School Food Trust, which was established by the Department for Education and Skills in 2005 to improve the quality of food in schools, has set a target to increase school lunch uptake to 46.5 per cent by March 2008 and 52.5 per cent by March 2009.

Councillors will meet at County Hall, in Northallerton, at 2pm, on Friday to talk over the school meal options.

We've discussed this before! Increasing prices isn't going to raise take-up - wages are not rising at the same rate as everything else (gas, electric, petrol, bus fares etc) ...something has to give!

This is ridiculous - when I was at school there was nothing they could have done to get me to eat school dinners! I took a pack-up if I was staying in at lunch-time and I know many parents who provided their kids with the same as they are cheaper in most cases and the kids prefer them!

Serve em chips and things that they like. Soon they'll be forced to eat raw veg anyway.

Look at the markets this morning SilverSurfer. I've been on about this for the last year.

The governments of the world are trying to start a global recession because we are almost out of oil. If consumption goes on as it does, prices of everything will spiral and then one day we will wake up without any petrol or much gas and the planet will be in chaoes.

They're trying to make the switch from oil to principally Hyrdogen (and other fuels) as smooth as possible. One way of slowing things down is a global recession - all this is being deliberately contrived. Our government is in on it but is powerless to stop rising prices.

Course I accept that I may just be a fruitloop codhead of a pirate. Then again, I may be right....

It's about time the provision of meals was passed back to the schools, and let the parents and teachers decide what is best for the kids, instead of accountants and politicians. There will be more chance that parents will buy into this and support thhe intiative. I believe there is enough money to provide for the kids if it is used wisely.

Someone is making a profit out of this somewhere.

My 3 children eat packed lunches at their schools now as it is cheaper than a hot school meal .
I can buy cheese & ham for sarnies , tomatoes & cucumber , mini sausages , bananas , apples , yoghurts ,fresh orange or apple drinks to name a few for a lot less & I know they have a balanced diet & can see they actually ate it when they get home .
I bet most of the children having school meals now are those who dont have to pay for them hense the numbers declining as parents on a tight budget look for the cheaper option .
I dont think its as much to to do with the quality of food as people make out it is

Back again - just called in to see how it was going! Akuma, it is me, the original, the girl, and yeah I've always had a capital "V" (check back if you like!). Nice of you to say I'm usually pleasant. I didn't particularly think I was ranting (far from it). I'm very reserved on this site. If you read my comments, you won't really find anything resembling a "rant" (not one that you can rate at more than a 2.5 anyway!!) I usually try and pick on my dopplegangers as soon as I spot them, then they disappear for a while.

You all heard about JK Rowling? She's bringing Harry Potter back.

The book (and film presumably) is to be called "Harry Potter and the Purple People Eating FTR".

The story goes that Harry has to defeat an Evil Green Queen (Reid) and Dark Wizard Voldemort (Galloway-Dixieland) and stop them bringing tyranny and chaos to the streets of YorkWarts.

All the regulars have been recruited to play in the film. Ron 'Cheesey' Weasley, Hormone Granger (18 this year) and of course, Harold himself (played by Harry H. Corbett).

Huzzah! Cannot wait.....

At the risk of ending up back on topic (though I have enjoyed reading the shenanigans of the previous two days!), my dad said I could have school dinners if I could prove they were cheaper than the pack up I had instead. I couldn't, so ended up having pack up for my whole school career.
When I worked at Poppy Road, school lunch was a treat if I forgot my pack up. And if I smiled, I got a double portion!
Incidentally, I like tapioca, semolina, and the skin on rice pudding and custard.
