HUNDREDS of residents, revellers, bar staff and restaurant workers in York were evacuated tonight due to an incident which forced police to close Ouse Bridge.

At 9pm this evening police closed of the area around Bridge Street and asked those in bars including The Living Room, the Slug & Lettuce, the King's Arms, The Parish and Yates's to leave and move to a safe distance as they surrounded a lone man on the bridge.

Residents living in the flats fronting the River Ouse were also asked to leave their homes at about 11pm.

For more details see The Press.

Blood hell,

I wonder what happened?

And I also wonder what reporter is still at work at the press on a sunday at 11.15pm.

Dedication to the job!!!

The real question is: How many days will this story be repeated on the Press website as "updated"?

Stevie, York says...
11:47pm Sun 10 Feb 08

Is this all over now, or is it still going on? Some of my friends texted me earlier on saying they had all been evacuated due to a bomb scare but that was about 9ish, didn't know it had got this serious.

Hils, York says...
11:49pm Sun 10 Feb 08

I live just around the corner from this. It's still going on and the current thought seems to be that the man claims to have a bomb and is threatening to blow himself and the bridge up

DanFleetwood, York says...
11:50pm Sun 10 Feb 08

This is still going on, i live in a flat near the bridge aparently there is someting goining on at yateses as well !

Stevie, York says...
11:50pm Sun 10 Feb 08

I am shocked that this is happening so close to home, you never think when you see all this stuff going on on TV that it may actually happen.

Please keep us updated on the situation Hils!

I can't find a webacm for the Ouse in York. Is there one?

RobFulford, Fulford, York says...
12:15am Mon 11 Feb 08

I was in the Living Room at the time, we got evacuated while finishing our meal.. but we did get it on the house! Couldn't really tell what was going on but some guy with a black backpack was walking up and down the bridge, the police wouldn't tell us what was happening. They were evacuating as far away as the Lowther so the police must be taking it seriously!

pipthemackem, york says...
12:16am Mon 11 Feb 08

well they have said york is like the next terroist target from london now due to like historic value and a huge tourist factor

Stevie, York says...
12:17am Mon 11 Feb 08

I don't think he will do anything, surely he would have done something by now if he was going to.

fazman, york says...
12:20am Mon 11 Feb 08

What happened to the shoot on sight tactics the London cops use on tube trains?,easy option then lets all get to bed,why be ruled by idiots like this?
Hope the goose is o k..very funny comment.

Dash, York says...
12:21am Mon 11 Feb 08

Hopefully he won't do anything Stevie. What is weird is there's nothing on Sky News or BBC 24 about it.

Stevie, York says...
12:23am Mon 11 Feb 08

Oh my god! Who heard that!

pipthemackem, york says...
12:24am Mon 11 Feb 08

the thing is if he really is a terrorist they wouldnt have had time to evacuate the bridge, surely he would have done what ever. hope he doesnt do anything but like its been said if he was gonna do somehting then surely he would have. hope it is just for attention and not anything serious

Jenixx, York says...
12:24am Mon 11 Feb 08

I don't think we'll find anything else out until tomorrow. I hope it turns out to be nothing serious and it probably won't be.

I am not sure, but three of us think we heard something and we are all in separate rooms. I would wait until we hear any reports before taking it as complete truth.

pipthemackem, york says...

i have no idea he is apparently either a student, eco warriour, anti-scientologist, an immigrant, or has something to do with the council, and has either a back pack , a man bag or a goose and has either been blown up or been shot by the police with rubber bullets so i think i will wait for the papers

sam, says...
12:43am Mon 11 Feb 08

we recieved information tht the man is threatening to blow himself up because he found out tht his goose was having an affair

llamaxx, york says...
12:44am Mon 11 Feb 08

yeah i reckon that to at least we get load of info proberly the front page

Stevie, York says...
12:45am Mon 11 Feb 08

I think we would have heard by now if he had actually blown himself up to be honest. Anyone close the area would have been evacuated by now too, so no way of really knowing, until people are let back into their homes.

Stevie, York says...
1:07am Mon 11 Feb 08

Once people start being allowed back into their homes we'll have a better idea of whats going on. I am guessing most people have not been allowed back in yet as I'm sure at least one person would log on here.

pipthemackem, york says...
1:10am Mon 11 Feb 08

if i had a car i would have driven up by now to see whats goin on if the guy has actually been shot but the apparent rubber bullets then surely they would have tried to clear everything us asap and would have had bomb disposl ppl on hand to deal with the aledged goose/man bag

llamaxx, york says...
1:11am Mon 11 Feb 08

hopefully we'll hear about it anyway it wil be eiather on the news later or the paper

pipthemackem, york says...
1:17am Mon 11 Feb 08

bernard briggs, says...

Ben_123, York says...

Yea i was listening to music pretty loud n heard a large rumble. App there was bomb squad around so dunno what the explosion was. Couldnt get anywhere near the bridge cos of police. Tried to get on river front but there is police there too.

DanFleetwood, York says...
1:23am Mon 11 Feb 08

The police will do a controlled explosion on his bag if the suspect anything

pipthemackem, york says...
1:24am Mon 11 Feb 08

wow so it actually was a bomb? not a goose?

Ben_123, York says...
1:25am Mon 11 Feb 08

that was what i thought it must of been, app my house mate who was in the town said that they had the robot explosion device. Didnt hear any gunshots tho but wasnt really listening.

Stevie, York says...
1:26am Mon 11 Feb 08

Yeh I thought that it may be a controlled explosion if anything

I have a lab report to hand in, which isnt getting done cos everything got a bit exciting round here. Im sure that will count as a valid excuse its not every day some one threatens to blow them self up outside your house. Well not in York anyway

Should have shot him in the head. Now we're gonna have to pay for his keep in the cells and then pay for his time when he is surely locked up in prison. Saying that, if it's his first offence, slapped wrist and out tomorrow.

Anyone know why the comments from the updated story got pulled?

Last I saw it was at 10 comments, Paul Healy had denied being there even though the pressed had quoted him.

Maybe the person commenting was a fake, or maybe it was one of the 7 comments I didn't see?

Bemused, York says...
4:01pm Mon 11 Feb 08

I'm surprised they allowed comments on the update at all, considering the possibility of an eventual court case.

This thread was magic last night, without the 'live reporting' we wouldn't have known what the hell was going on. Thus the need to make sure we don't lose it.

It’s the people logging on to the press website at 4 in the morning, getting so excited about a potential bomb blast, people getting excited and saying things like “Hahahaha - I've fired baton rounds and see them go clean through a sheet of plywood etc urges me to say, get a life…….
Turn on BBC world, you might get a look into what’s really happening…..

Paul Healy had denied being there even though the pressed had quoted him.

He didn't deny it, he explained that he lives very close to Ouse Bridge and thats why he was there. You just don't know where the flats are that he quoted as his address.
