THREE deadly shotguns form part of a haul of weapons handed in to police as part of an amnesty in York and Selby.
The three guns and 24 cartridges make up part of a terrifying haul of lethal weapons which have been handed in to police stations anonymously since an amnesty started last week.
Police have also been handed four large knives, 12 smaller knives, one combat knife, one meat cleaver and two BB guns - making a total of 23 weapons.
The amnesty - which aims to get dangerous knives and guns off the streets - was launched earlier this month as part of Operation Maximum Impact.
The Press told last week how police in York and Selby launched the month-long weapons amnesty as part of the major cross-borders operation.
Police hope the weapons amnesty, which runs until February 29, will encourage people to hand in any firearms and knives which they have and reduce the number of incidents involving knives.
Sergeant Jo Sutheran, who is running the amnesty, said: "This is a good start to the amnesty and we are hoping to take more weapons out of circulation during the course of the month. We are really pleased with the response so far."
Members of the public can place any unwanted weapons in large red plastic containers, which are chained down in the reception areas at York Police Station in Fulford Road and Selby Police Station.
Anyone who hands a weapon over as part of the amnesty can remain anonymous.
Officers are asking anyone with firearms to hand them in over the front counter because they need to be kept safe - but police have stressed that their right to remain anonymous will not be affected.
North Yorkshire Police have joined up with their colleagues from West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Humberside throughout February for a Operation Maximum Impact, the month-long co-ordinated crime crackdown.
The amnesty is one of a number of activities being carried out, along with a focus on vehicle crime across the area an operation to catch any wanted offenders who have so far avoided being brought to justice.
This week will see officers concentrating on combating violent crime, including domestic violence.
Next week they will aim to tackle vandalism and disorder.
Crimestoppers is supporting the initiative by appealing for anyone with information about crime to ring them in confidence on 0800 555 111.

But I still maintain the fact that the gurker knife has no other purpose or practical use than to kill people.

But they can be possessed legally as wall decorators, collectors items, tourist souvenirs, or militaria.
Like with kitchen knives, the law is only broken when they are carried on the street without a very good cause.

But I'd rather the police have it, than in future some kid find it in loft along with his late grandads other items.

The kitchen knives and the meat cleaver are a bit pointless.
But I still maintain the fact that the gurker knife has no other purpose or practical use than to kill people.
THATS WHAT IT WAS DESIGNED FOR!
