CITY leaders intend to increase York's council tax by 4.75 per cent - more than inflation, but less than first feared.

The ruling Liberal Democrats on City of York Council announced the planned rise, as they set out their proposed budget for 2008/09.

Officers had advised the council to go for the maximum possible rise, and a 4.95 per cent increase was anticipated.

But deputy council leader Ceredig Jamieson-Ball said there were fears that the Government may cap councils that went for the higher increase.

He said: "The 4.75 felt safer than 4.95, but it also has less overall impact on the amount local residents have to pay."

Leader Steve Galloway said keeping council tax down was residents' number one priority.

He hailed the consultation that had gone into the budget, and said it was the most "well-informed" the council had ever produced.

Like they care about our pockets - they just don't want to get capped. This tax is becoming a bigger rip off every year and I for one am getting fed up of the constant above inflation increases.

Yet again more money for the Council. I wouldn't mind pay the CC if i got something out of it. The amount of Dirt, Litter and Dog dirt down my street is rediculous and have to watch stepping out my own front door. COYC only care about Tourists and no doubt the increase in Council Tax will go somewhere to benefit those and not its residents.

Yes but without the tourists the rates would be even higher.

Don't think the Council spend money throwing down dirt, litter and dog dirt, but I think you may have just demonstrated one reason why tax keeps going up.

The man himself says that the Press senior management are either in the pockets, or terrified, of animal rights cranks and their associated councillors as any derogatory reference to them is frowned upon and immediately removed from the site.
Apparently it was a comment on the late Sunday night breaking news story of the alleged 'bomber' on Ouse Bridge, and what did it were these typically Rustian words
no sane person would go near a stinking, dreadlocked, soap dodger who can't form human relationships so prefers the company of animals

In which year will we get the long promised price cut in our council tax? £500 a home seems much more resonable.

i missed that comment but alas again freedom of speech is frowned upon by those people who think the same as brad but havent got the balls to stand up and be counted.

Talk about pigs flying - that will never happen!

Who promised it?

And there was I thinking we were going to have an 11% rise.

Unbelievable. I can't believe that, or the earlier wording in a blog post ended with that result. That's tame.

I hardly agreed with a thing Rust wrote, but unless he properly breaks rules, he shouldn't be banned from the site.

Am beginning to thing the Press have some other agenda, silencing certain people and by doing so controlling their version of "freedom of speech"? Not good times, not at all.

So they have increased it 0.20% less than the maximum. Are we supposed to be grateful? They only kept it slightly below the maximum so that they dont get told to cap the amount of increase nect year. Our council are a joke.

And before I'm forced to change my name here as well, can I just say that I nominate Bemused to take over the spare un-PC opinionated blog vacancy created by Rust's departure! From your commenting on the site I think you'd do it well, without the "risk" that the Press might have seen in Rust.

Go on Press, you know it makes sense, send Bemused an email and give the guy a go!

It's meant as a complement... that you wouldn't write in as abrupt a way, but still get your views across - probably without the "perceived" offence from certain wordings.

The Press comments, blogs and forums are no good without a balance and range of views, whether we agree with them all or not.

I take it Rust has been banned? Along with his blog?

There's definitely an Orwellean theme kicking in here, in society as well.

If you have a view nowadays which is considered politically incorrect or racist, you get chopped for it - you could even go to prison for it. Where's that in a supposedly democratic society then?

Political correctness and trying to mask peoples feelings and views just stokes up time bombs for the future. You are told how you are supposed to think nowadays and if you disagree, you are shunned for it.

Political correctness is responsible for so many problems in society nowadays because everybody has rights and the laws have changed to skirt around issues. The country is falling to bits. We walk the streets in fear because they are out of control, we are paying through the nose for everything because the country has become one big social state for anyone who wants to come, we feed millions into Brussels and what exactly do we get out of all of this?

Mark my words brothers, our day will come. Political correctness will be despatched back to the fetid pit it crawled out of, free speach will be restored.

Sorry, I do go on a bit.

This is a case of managing expectations. Tell everyone the rise will be huge then bring it in lower than suggested yet still far higher than the inflation rate of 2.2% . More than twice the rate of inflation!

Franky, York says...
7:53pm Tue 12 Feb 08

And more to the point more than twice almost anyone's pay/salary increase! These constant above inflation council tax rises - accompanied by Council budget cutting - for the past few years is what makes York a difficult place to live.

As much as I don't like paying council tax, let's get this in perspective, it'll be less than a quid a week increase on average. I'm more bothered about the increases in fuel prices, both at home and for the car. The government should be lobbied to do something about this.

If we are talking about value for money maybe we should look at the contribution we pay to the police in our ct bills,£165 last bill how can they justify that as value for money, crime rising etc, local policing hardly exists, we are being robbed

It's not going to get better unless somebody makes tough decisions. The problem is the "sick, lame and lazy", a relatively growing number that takes many forms in our society. These are not my words rather those of a very senior councillor and a couple of other suits I overheard in a pub close by the guildhall. Not to be a hippocrit, I'll state now that I agree with them! We need these people to have the courage of their convictions and take the next step.

In my opinion, Rust is a racist, sexist bigot and his comments on the forum were designed to incite. His blogs however, were quite good. I agreed with him more than a few times and I'm sorry that they are gone. It's a shame that the success of his blogs went to his head so much that he thought he could insult people whenever he felt like it. Some of his comments stepped way over the bounds of decency (once again in my opinion).
