A YORK soldier was stabbed by a masked assailant while out for his morning run.

After demanding money the attacker stabbed Staff Sergeant Iain Bareham in his left buttock before fleeing the scene.

Despite his injuries, SSgt Bareham managed to limp more than a mile back to his barracks before collapsing. He was rushed to York Hospital where he was treated for stab wounds.

The incident happened on Towthorpe Lane, York, at approximately 7.20am yesterday.

Before being stabbed he was struck on the back of his legs with a metal pole, bringing him to the ground.

SSgt Bareham, speaking from the hospital bed, said: "I am in shock after the attack. I feel weak from the loss of blood and am now receiving treatment from medical staff at the barracks where I am based."

SSgt Bareham's father, Norman, spoke of his shock when he received the news.

"My wife and I got a call from Iain's wife, Vicky, who told us that whilst Iain had been out for his daily run he had been attacked and then stabbed and taken to hospital," he said.

"I was in a state of shock. It is unbelievable that at that time of the morning that this violent attack took place. You just don't expect that sort of thing happening."

Mr Bareham said he hopes anyone with information will come forward and help find his son's attacker.

"My concern primarily is for my son, but I am also worried that somebody capable of this kind of extreme violence is still out there. I ask anyone who might know something to come forward and help find this dangerous man who assaulted my son."

He was released at noon after receiving treatment and is resting at the medical centre at Queen Elizabeth Barracks, in Strensall.

A police spokeswoman said they are now appealing for witnesses who may have information on the assault. The offender is described as white, about 5ft 8ins tall, of stocky build and was wearing a thick, woolly, black balaclava, a dark green or black jacket made of thick material, dark blue jeans and black, Magnum- style boots.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, saw a man matching his description in the area of Towthorpe Lane or Haxby, or can provide any information relating to the incident is asked to phone York CID on 0845 60 60 247.

SSgt Bareham spends much of his spare time raising money for fellow troops who have been wounded in battle. In December, he underwent a 24-hour gruelling fitness challenge in aid of Help For Heroes, a charity set up to support wounded soldiers, and raised thousands of pounds.

What a strange story.
Who would be hanging about on a freezing sub-zero morning in a country lane waiting to mug someone?
Who would pick on a obviously fit soldier to attack?
If he wasn't safe we are all in grave danger from this thug.
Let's hope he is caught soon.

Well done on the mile limp while injured SSgt Bareham.

I agree this is a strange unusual story,as a soldier myself this guy must be thick, and obviousley needs to be locked up.To try and mug a guy on a morning jog is mad how many joggers would carry much if any cash on them?.All the best s/sgt Bareham i hope york police catch this thug.

I'm surprised the solider didn't give him some back.

This attacker was lucky he got away, although it does say he was hit from behind with no warning.

But I agree, anyone brave/stupid enough to attack a solider is a danger to everyone.

Unfortunately for me, I cycle up and down both roads from Strensall to Haxby on a fairly regular basis. I've never seen anyone loitering - I've seen a few cars in ditches - but at the times I ride, it's usually very late.

All the best to Sergeant Bareham.

If the mugger is stupid enough to try a repeat offence - given the organisation - he might find his brains spattered against the Towthorpe sign courtesy of a few c8 carbine rounds thus rendering society free of one less leech.

Of course, some cash hungry solicitor would soon be one the case defending the cadaver's post-human rights.

I concur; very strange!
Quote "The offender is described as white, about 5ft 8ins tall, of stocky build and was wearing a thick, woolly, black balaclava, a dark green or black jacket made of thick material, dark blue jeans and black, Magnum- style boots."
This description would fit a number of the "servicemen" at Strensall. If I was involved in this investigation I would look "close to home". Has the SSgt had anyone on a fizzer recently fitting that description, or had to speak to someone regarding their standard of uniform, haircut, etc?
I had an olive green balaclava issued to me as part of the uniform when I was is the mob; don't know what the current issue colour is. Then again, the current state of the MoD, the guys and gals buy most of their "uniform" themselves,
Get well soon, H4H needs some more money! And next time you go jogging off base, take your own big stick and a mobile phone!! ;-)

It seems like someone who knows exactly the S/Sergeants early morning routine.
Before this story gets BLOWN UP out of all proportion their is a need to call on CORPORAL Punishment to have a SHOT at the CASE to go GUNNING for the thug before he trys to MEDAL with some other poor soul in PRIVATE only this time manages to RIFLE through their pockets.

"ex-con" - The term is "chav" not "chaff".
I'm surprised you didn't know that, as it seems pretty clear that you are one of the highest order!

PS - Get well soon Sarge and be careful who you make friends with as it definitiely sounds like an inside job sir.

Chaff is pretty useless isn't it so it will do as well as chav.

I think that pilots of fighter planes find chaff very useful. Especial when they have been locked on to by an IR tracking missile!

Stabbed in the buttocks?! Is anyone else thinking of Forrest Gump or is it just me?

Hope the soldier gets better quickly and I'd advise the use of an inflatable ring when sitting for the time being.

Not been down there since Sunday, but there were some filthy looking travellers camping out between Haxby and Towthorpe all last week (about 200 yards from where that photo was taken).

I know where you're coming from. Let me get this straight - someone was loitering in Towthorpe, crime capital of N. Yorks, decided to mug a soldier going for a jog (who probably wasn't an 8 stone weakling), by stabbing him once in the arse cheek? Was this guy due for active service in the near future or perhaps a family engagement that he couldn't miss? All a bit fishy if you ask me.

I should think anyone hit from behind without warning by a metal bar is going to struggle to fight back. Any mugger trying it on with a jogger is just far too stupid. When I jog I only take my house key.

SSgt is as hard as nails and it a cowardly b*stard to do such a thing. If it was a soldier that did this or not the scumbag deserves to get sent to iraq/afgan and shown what it really means to be nails.

To those who could even think that this story has been made up, should not judge others by the way you may live your lives or by the company that you keep.
As for a reason not to deploy...how thick is that ex-con...if he was due to deploy within 24hrs he still would have gone - with pride and a sense of duty and would not have got out of such a mission that easily! Thank Christ we do have men and women in our forces helping against the War - if it were left up to s**t brainless individuals such as the ex-con the world would be in a much poorer state and with the same level of education - ie clearly none!! Thank god that you were able to defend yourself and fought for your life...someone less able may not have been so lucky as to tell their story. Get well soon!!

Personally know this guy so let’s clear a few things up.
Yes he was attacked and yes he did fight back and gave as much as he got but the other guy had a metal bar and a knife!!!!! Fair odds that.
“ex-con” are country is protected by the best risking there lives every day in a different country, even coming back in boxes but hey what do you know. The reason we don’t send ‘Chaffs’ to war is because they are to busy posting stupid comments!!
By the way ‘Chaff’ its ‘Chav’ you just failed the army entrance test mate!!
“Barnaby” hmm crime capital of N.Yorks hasn’t down to bad has it…. Some poor person murdered the same place last year!!!!! Then the unfortunate murder in the house just down the road from the attack!!!! Hmmm lovely place. Op tour!! Hasn’t all the units in that area just returned, shouldn’t you be reading the articles instead of just passing comment.
“Bernard briggs” of course you were there so you would now, you must be very tall if 5ft 8in is a dwarf to you!!!
Are we losing sight of the fact that our society is going down and instead of posting mindless comments we should be more concerned of getting these wastes of lives that attacked an innocent Soldier that from what I saw recently raised a lot of money for fellow injured soldiers of the streets?

Interesting comments about runners not carrying anything - how about "gadgets" like IPod's heart monitors, watches, etc - easily sold for price of a ...!! As for attacker being thick - look at some of the comments already posted - he is not alone!!
