A PUB manager today told how the atmosphere in his establishment had improved since two "evil spirits" were cleansed from one of the rooms.

Steve Holding, who manages the Blackwell Ox Inn, in Sutton-On-The-Forest, near York, said he had always suspected there was "something" in the private dining room at the back of the pub.

Mr Holding, 37, said although no one had ever seen any ghosts in the room, it had always been very cold and had had a strange atmosphere, and female staff had avoided going in there.

Mr Holding said he got in touch with a woman who "cleansed" spirits, and that last Monday she visited the inn and said there were "bad spirits" in the room.

He said she returned with two other women to the pub, where they proceeded to exorcise three spirits from the room.

Mr Holding said he was not sure how the women removed them, but said they burned something in the room, and that they made sure the windows were clean both inside and out.

He said that, apparently, two of the spirits were "bad", but one was a "nice old lady".

"One of the spirits was from the 18th century, he's on the run from the law, he's been hiding out, and that's why he's scared to leave the building," he said.

"Everyone says how much nicer it is in that room - which is quite strange. Even the boss - who's quite sceptical - can tell the difference in the room. The room was always cold and now it isn't - which is strange."

He said that, in order to keep the room "spirit-free", the women had advised him to put fresh flowers in there, light candles, play "beautiful music" - and even apply a mix of vinegar to the flooring. Mr Holding, who has been at the 19th century pub for about three years, said: "I feel a lot better about the whole thing now. Since the spirits have gone, people are happy to go in the room."

He said he did not know why the spirits had been in the room, but he was told their presence may have had something to do with the fact that it used to be part of another building.

They should stick with premium brands rather than the dodgy stuff from the market.

It sounds to me like the woman who can flush out evil spirits can also flush out rediators.

The pub should have bought a radiator valve key from B&Q - £2.99.
Cheaper than the "cleaner no doubt".

Er maybe those getting so hot under the collar. The story seems to me to be a bit of innocent fun, what harm in the great scheme of things has it done and yet your comments are as if this is a personal attack on your sensibilities. Can I ask a question, as some who reads the paper everyday how many of the critics forked out 40p for it? If so then it's fair enough for you to express an opinion, and I'd defend your right to do so, but if you are just picking these stories up on the web then who are you to criticise? You have nothing invested in the paper, no one has forced or coerced you to read it, just scratching my head over the tone of the comments, chill out!

Ditto. What an excellent idea! Get rid of the champagne socialists! Brown was defending his devious chum today - the speaker - even though he's dodgy.

BTW - For all the democracists out there, I'll vote for any party who offers a referendum on the death penalty.

Are you suggesting that only people who choose to pay for a printed copy should have a say?

That goes against the reality that any modern newspaper - our Press included - needs to offer itself on the internet and also opens itself to comment, or dwindle into obscurity.

The comment you got upset about was clearly lighthearted!

Most everyone is totally clueless as to what a ghost is, including the critics who put down the efforts of these women. It does seem as though their effort was succesful, whatever their means of bringing it about; It is a shame so little is known of this spirit phenomenone...
