FRIGHTENED people across York and North and East Yorkshire were woken in their beds early today as an earthquake struck, shaking buildings and setting off burglar alarms.

The tremor, which measured 5.3 on the Richter scale and had an epicentre 15 miles north of Lincoln, happened at 12.56am.

Sources said that the night shift at Nestlé Rowntree factory in York had felt the building shake during the quake.

Callers also reported buildings shaking violently in Tang Hall and Clifton in the city, with a woman from Rawdon Avenue, in Tang Hall, saying: "It was really scary."

North Yorkshire Police said they received 60-70 emergency 999 calls from across the county in an hour, mostly from people seeking reassurance.

Inspector Simon Lovell said the force received another 600 non-emergency calls, with other residents ringing the fire and ambulance services. "There fortunately appears to have been no injuries," he said.

However, the county fire and rescue service said crews had been sent out to a property in York Street, Selby, where a chimney breast had collapsed, and to another property in Wooler Street, Scarborough, following reports of cracking to walls and ceilings.

Insp Lovell said: "All our officers have been carrying out reassurance patrols, and checking there is no sign of any damage."

The Press newsroom was inundated by callers who had been woken by their homes shaking, and asking whether there had been a tremor or even whether a bomb had gone off. Some said they had been scared by the experience.

Terence Shorte, who lives in the luxury Westgate flats in Leeman Road, said: "The whole building was rolling backwards and forwards, and from side to side."

Crystal Antink, an American living in Micklegate, York, said she had experienced earthquakes in the past in California and knew straight away what had happened.

She said that while the tremor was not as bad as the quakes she had been through in America, she had still had concerns about the brick building she was in. "They don't have brick buildings over there."

Keith Chapman, who lives in the Nunnery Lane area, said he had been woken by his house shaking, and wondered whether it had been a tremor or an explosion.

Dawn Arundel, from Sowerby Road, Acomb, said: "I was fast asleep and woke up with the bed and the room shaking. My husband said: "Did you feel that? What the hell was it?"

A caller from Haxby said that his whole house had shaken, and a number of burglar alarms had been set off.

Press design editor Lisa Cook, who lives in the Hull Road area, said: "I was woken by my wardrobe banging violently. I thought at first I was having a weird dream."

David Abram, a farmer from between Westow and Leavening, near Malton, said he had just come in from seeing to the sheep, as it was the lambing season, and he had been going to the toilet when the tremor struck. "The toilet moved - it had a bit of a wobble. I wondered if I had had too strong a curry!"

Coun Nigel Ayre, a City of York Councillor, contacted the paper to say there had been some kind of earth tremor in the Heworth Without area that he represents.

'5.3 on Richter
Scale'

A notice on the earthquake reporting service of the British Geological Survey stated it had hit 5.3 on the Richter Scale. saying:

"Earthquake, 27 February 2008, 00:56 UTC
PRELIMINARY LOCATION 22 km SW of Grimsby/8 km East of Market Rasen
PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE 5.3 ML"

The US Geological Survey recorded the earthquake at the same time but stated a slightly more modest reading of 4.7 on the Richter Scale.

An earthquake is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes are recorded with a seismometer, also known as a seismograph.

The moment magnitude of an earthquake is conventionally reported, or the related and mostly obsolete Richter magnitude, with magnitude 3 or lower earthquakes being mostly imperceptible and magnitude 7 causing serious damage over large areas
Large earthquakes occur less frequently in the United Kingdom. It has been calculated the average recurrences are:

an earthquake of 3.7 - 4.6 every year

an earthquake of 4.7 - 5.5 every ten years

an earthquake of 5.6 or larger every 100 years.

Scores of people contacted The Press to share their experience of the earthquake

Andrew Whitney, in York, said: "It was really strange, the whole house shook, it woke me up. Afterwards there were crooked paintings hanging on my walls, some ornaments still in situ very close to the edge of their shelves and scarily my crystal chandelier still swinging violently."

Audrey Spence, in Bramham Road, Acomb, York, emailed to say: "It is 1.10am 27 Feb 2008 - did other parts of York suffer an earth tremor at l.02am to-day? We did on Bramham Road, Acomb - people came out of houses opposite and the wardrobes in our bedrooms rattled. It was quite eerie!

Mrs A Thacker, in Woothorpe, York, said: "We've just had what felt like an earth tremor, at approx 12.58am. Me and my husband were downstairs and the whole house shook. We wondered if it was the wind, but when my husband went outside there was no wind and when I went upstairs my daughter said her whole bedroom had shaken, including the furniture. It only lasted a few seconds, but I wondered if anywhere else in York had experienced it. We live in the Woodthorpe area."

Andrew Oliver, in Acomb, York, said: "At 00:59 this morning I'm sure I felt the earth move. It felt like a tremor. It was strong enough to throw items from our book case. Did you get any other reports of this or is my house about to fall into a hole?"

Paul Botting, in Wheldrake, emailed to say: "Hi News Desk. It's 12.58am and I'm in Wheldrake. I have just felt the whole house shake. It went on for several seconds and woke the whole house up. It sounded quite loud. Do you know if we have had a minor earthquake in the York area?"

Dominic Gibbon, of Redgrave Close, York, said: "My wife and I have just been woken up by an earthquake shaking the house. The room was shaking so much it woke us up and it was making the dresser handles rattle. Has anyone else reported a similar experience? It must have been an earthquake because we can't find any other explanation!"

Chris McDonough, in Gate Helmsley, said: "We felt an earth tremor lasting around 5-7 seconds. It seemed to come in two bursts, I first thought it was a heavy vehicle passing the house as we live right on the A166. The whole house shook, it was quite scary!!!!! We also run the local pub and rang them to see if it was more than just our house shaking and they confirmed they felt it too."

Jason, in York, said: "I thought I heard someone running up the stairs then all of a sudden the pictures in the multi clip frame started to shimmer then the heavier photo frame started to move then all of a sudden the whole building swayed left to right as I was looking towards the doorway."

Catherine Major, in Brishopthorpe, said: "I was standing in my front room talking to my husband when the doors started to rattle and shake. I felt the floor underneath my feet vibrate to such an extent that I had to put my hand out to steady myself. The wind outside sounded vicious. My husband was sitting on the settee and he said he felt it move'. I actually put my hand out to steady myself and asked my husband what was happening. He said he thought it may have been a small earthquake or tremor. It lasted for about ten seconds."

Meh - this sort of thing happens about once every 20 years. I heard a loud noise at about 1am, thought it was a couple of books falling off a shelf in the next room and went back to sleep.

I'm now waiting for the government to blame the tremor on Al Qaeda and/or illegal immigrants.

Ditto Lou. I heard a massive rush of wind as well before and then after, it was gone.

There's more in this than meets the eye. There's one or two theories that this wasn't a 'natural' earthquake.

It's something I got told about (alledgedly) written on another BB about 1/2 an hour ago.
It's reporting a news agency in the Middle East that says Al Qaeda have claimed responsibility for an underground nuclear detonation in the Lincolnshire area earlier this morning.

This is pure James Bond fantasy stuff and is something I am sure that could be debated in the Guildhall as a serious issue. Scarily enough though if you do a search for underground nuclear testing, one of the characteristics before and after is a strong rush of wind. Don't worry, it won't be that, someone is scaremongering.

I woke up shortly before 1am and experienced a weird feeling like I knew something really bad was going to happen. Then we heard a loud roar from outside. The wind had been getting up during the evening and, initially, I thought it was that. Then the bedroom moved, the bed rocked from side to side, the lightshade swung and the cat, who was on the bed, woke up startled and jumped off the bed. The worst part was the roar and the thought that there might have been an explosion, or a plane crash. We live not far from RAF Linton-on-Ouse and they are night flying at the moment. My wife said it reminded her of the Flixborough explosion 30 years ago when her house shook in Hull. It was a very un-nerving experience but, as we are British, we calmed ourselves down by brewing a cup a tea before finally getting back to sleep at 3am.

Was at my pc when it happened. Sat still whilst everything around me shook... then when it had finished, and the really loud rumbling sound had gone, i thought a train had derailed on the nearby rails - ran to window to look but nothing there.

I went outside, but apart from a few house alarms going off there was nothing to show. I've never felt one before, so i didnt know what it was. I had a suspicion, but also thought that perhaps i'd imagined it... (i was tired), until a friend in selby text me saying that his whole house had just shook.... then i knew it had to be an earthquake.

Pretty cool really. Cant say i was scared. Whilst it was happening, it was just so surreal, i didnt know what was going on.. time seemed to stop still.

North Yorkshire Police said they received 60-70 emergency 999 calls from across the county in an hour, mostly from people seeking reassurance.

Inspector Simon Lovell said the force received another 600 non-emergency calls, with other residents ringing the fire and ambulance services.

Exactly which emergency service were people hoping to receive assistance from?

Police? Well, there hasn't been a crime.

Ambulance? Well, no one has been injured.

Fire Brigade? Well, nothing is on fire and no one is trapped.

Hmm.

Perhaps there is a new emergency service that I am unaware of - one that deals strictly in panic and hyerbole.

Slept right through it! Then again, I also slept right through the 1987 hurricane: I was living in London at the time, and woke up to find the remains of the chimney in the garden.

"They don't have brick buildings over there ."

If by California you mean the middle of Death Valley then possibly not, but I was in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago and plenty were in evidence. Granted, timber frame houses are more common and larger buildings usually consist of very heavy duty RSJ superstructures, but there certainly is some construction using brick.

Conforming to legally binding earthquake codes is a big deal there, and imposes quite a big cost on buildings and maintenance. Insurance policies are not valid without full compliance, so the locals take it seriously. Some of the older adobe structures are uninsurable as a result.

I dont think that will happen anytime soon.

Some of us appreciate that they have a hard job to do, and the red tape BS annoys them far more than we could know.

But so long as the press keeps printing stories of there **** ups and ignores there successes, the majority will hold a negative view.

Reminds me of that old story:

A man is awaken in the middle of the night by a crash in his back yard. He looks outside - only to see a man breaking into his storage shed. He calls 999 & proceeds to tell them there is someone breaking into his shed. The dispatcher asks if the suspect is armed, and the man answers "No". The dispatcher then informs the citizen that there are no officers available right then, and as soon as one is available - they will be dispatched. The man is shocked and asks how long this might take. The dispatcher tells him it could be 10-15 minutes. The man says the thief will be gone by then - but proceeds to hang up.

A couple of minutes later, the dispatcher gets another call from the same address. The man sounds out of breath, and states "Well, I just went outside and shot the guy breaking into my shed". Within seconds, sirens could be heard as cars came flying to the location. Overhead, the police chopper was circling - shining lights on the back yard. As the officers pulled up, the man in the shed tried to run - but was immediately caught and taken into custody. He was checked for injuries - but none were found.

The Commander on the scene walks up to the homeowner, and states "I thought you told us you shot this guy".

The homeowner calmly replies "I thought you didn't have any officers available"

I recon the cat was more scared of the noise created by the shaking that fear of the actual quake.

Its a safe bet that animals dont percieve natural hazards such as storms and quakes the same way humans do.

Its funny you ask, just before the quake hit our dog raised his hind leg and let one rip, i was just about to blame the wife when the room started shaking.

I don't mean to sound snide here but why 'of course' did your Wife blame the central heating??!!

I was shaken out of my stupor for long enough to think: "Lumme, that wind's got up it's rocking the building." I then went straight back to sleep.

As I vaguely recall from reading the instructions in the LA telephone directory about twelve years ago, what you're supposed to do is stand under the door frame and have a barbecue, but you're not allowed to phone your friends up to ask them round.

We live above a nuclear bunker in acomb, on top of a hill,on the 4th floor(top),just accross from a water tower,me and mrs went to bed at about 1am, i'd had a bad day and she said she was gonna end it nicely for me. I was watching around the room, lights on, at the mrs, felt a rumble, then the buiding did start to sway from side to side, everything rattling, she didnt feel the 1st one,but by the 2nd tremor,we were up ready to move, nothin anywhere, alarms, people out,was strange, then the polterguiste theory, then nuclear theory,or the building fallin on us theory, or was i just enjoying my good lady's massage, especaially ? but sod it ,mrs was scared after that so the earth NEARLY moved for me, and the shock nearly moved me !!!!! any body else experienc the likes ? !!

The absolute horror of waking up with the bedroom upside down was quite frankly mind blowing experience.
What was beyond believe was when I peered out of the bedroom window whilst grasping tightly onto anything I could that was still standing-only to see my house hurtling down the river ouse of speeds up to 97mph!!
The thunderous sounds and screams kept my partner and I awake all night as the house carried on destroying anything in its path and eventually ending up in devon of all places.

Yes I felt it, but riduclous parade of drama queens on local radio and no doubt on Look North tonight (Harry stood in front of a damaged chimney or similar) are tedious in the extreme!

Get over it. It's not a Tsunami.

Hes a Springer Spanial, but you know if he lifts his leg you have to retire to a safe distance.

Thankfully I was too drunk to really register much, just thought it was rather windy outside and then went back to sleep. Woke up around four but mainly thought I was up due to having a major thirst on. Mrs T slept all the way through it didn't hear a thing

Well what a bizarre experience. I woke up to a loud rumble, wardrobe doors banging and feeling like i was rocking back and forth! Good old boyfriend slept right thru but in my sleepiness i thought it was a dream! I wonder what the doggies thought of it!!!
...I would suspect they thought it was just the suspension on their moving, and to be fair, I would imagine they had other things on their mind, than worry about that.......oh sorry, DOGGIES !

I woke up literally minutes before the earthquake struck, which I believe was a warning to me that something unusual was going to happen. I felt the earthquake at 1 o'clock with an almightly 'roar'. It shook the house. I will never forget the experince, it really frightened me I wondered what was happening.

I was watching Die Hard 2 at the time and was just nodding off. The earth tremor rekindled my enthusiasm for John McLane to such a level that masturbation was inevitable.
