Animal rights pair held

TWO animal rights campaigners thought to be involved in protests against a York restaurant have been arrested on suspicion of harassment.

North Yorkshire Police said today that a number of items were also seized as part of an investigation.

A spokeswoman said that the two people who were arrested were a 40-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman.

They were suspected of harassment "relating to an incident connected to a restaurant in York".

She said both had been released on police bail while inquiries continued.

A number of allegations have been made on the Animal Liberation Front's (ALF) website about police officers' alleged conduct during the arrests.

The website carries a request for supporters to email North Yorkshire Police's professional standards.

Postings on the site claim the arrests related to the sustained campaign by YAFA (York Action for Animals) against the sale of foie gras by the Blue Bicycle restaurant in Fossgate.

YAFA organised a series of demonstrations outside the restaurant, which it said was the last in York to sell the controversial paté.

Earlier this month, it claimed victory, saying foie gras had been dropped from the menu.

But the Blue Bicycle said although the dish had gone from its main menu, it was still available on the specials board and for outside catering contracts, and it could reappear on the main menu in the future.

It is claimed on the ALF site that a property was raided by police under a search warrant issued in relation to unproven allegations of a "harrassing" phone call made on New Years Eve.

It is also claimed that items removed from the property included computers, mobile phones, a video camera and magazines and that cars were also searched.

Another posting on the website contains information on how to avoid "sensitive" information - for example about an "upcoming illegal project" - being obtained from computers when raided by the authorities.

The police spokeswoman said because two arrests had been made, the force would be unable to make any further comment.

A spokeswoman for the Blue Bicycle declined to comment.

Campaigners 'shocked' by the news

Alan Swain, spokesperson for YAFA, said today that news of the arrests had come as a shock.

"YAFA is a peaceful, law-abiding organisation committed to bringing about change through the democratic process," he said. "We exercise our right of peaceful protest, and have worked very closely with North Yorkshire Police throughout our demonstrations to keep them fully appraised of our plans. We have developed a positive working relationship with the police and are proud that our demonstrations have always passed without incident.

"We have been made aware that two of our members have been arrested in correction with a complaint of harassment.

"We understand that these complaints do not relate to our demonstrations, and the two individuals deny any wrongdoing," he said.

Slight Conflict?

Considering the man saying that the YAFA is a peacefull law abiding organisation im surprised he has been inviting ALF speakers andlinking to some of their organisations. As well as having members of his peaceful organisation commenting on how best to hide information on upcoming illegal activities.

They dont seem to realise that the police can browse your internet history even after it has been deleted and you store 'decoy data' on an external hard drive.

I doubt the majority of the YAFA are related to the terrorist events, its nice to have some support in showing them that not the entirity of their organisation is above board.

I think the pro YAFA people tired of being called mentalists by the majority of the board. As far as im aware though DinoFun is stil around and Barnaby seems to have a soft spot for them, or a soft spot for arguing, one or the other.

Considering the YAFAs stance on removing and ignoring anything that so much as speckles a tarnish on their (according to them) gleaming crusade of honour and truth I doubt they will publicise this much, at least not where anyone will argue the facts that they portray about the incident.

Did i say they were? I'm saying why the hell should i pay my tax for police officers to supervise a pointless protest when they should be out stopping crime. People have the right to sell what they want and will continue to do so while it is popular. Its their right!!! it shouldn't be the protestors right to stand outside trying to ruin their business for making a living and contributing to society!

Look i'll agree it is a nasty dish. But people like it and it is their right to eat it. It is not fair to stand outside somebodys property(business) with the aim to deter people away. It is not piecefull protest rather unethical protest. The over paid are usually over paid for a reason and it would be intetesting to see how much of the "over paid" actually ate the dish. The protest should have been held away rom the premesis full stop.

It was pointless you can protest all you want people do what they want!!! its a well known dish which people enjoy. It is a serious protest about a meat which really has no place in today's world. The cruel trade of raising poor miserable chickens for slaughter has had a rethink so why not stop this and nip it in the bud. There is TONS of lovely meat available which has been bred and cared for ethically for our comsumption....

Because its ok for you lot to try make us feel guilty for what we do, wear and eat. You tried to call armstrong a over paid pig who had his meal ruined and you got the didums thrown back in your face. As for the dish i do not eat it. But people do and it is their right to. The public hate them and they only represent a hand full of people!

There is a strong trend of residents in York who are not in support of the YAFA currently, and while unnecessary cruelty is frowned upon cooking for food is a different scenario.

The production of foie gras is not always as bad as people make out. I have seen first hand gesse running to be fed by foie gras methods, the tubes rarely damage the geese since they are worth so much and they are treated with care because in teh later stages they become more prone to disease.

Admittedly there ahve been some farms where cruelty was rife, but these were for the most part shut down in the late 90's when there was a protest by farmers because the minority were ruining the image of the majority.

Unfortunately campaigns from the likes of PETA humanised the process, making it appear to the public tht the animals were practically choked to death on corn. PLease people geese do not have a gag reflex, they can swallow large fish whole, a small tube barely discomforts or stretetches the throat.

Generalising all foie gras farms as evil and inhumane is just the same as some commenters calling the supporters of the ban hippies, smelly and disgusting.

The only time there is any really cruelty in foie gras is when farm staff are violent, this could occur in any situation. I do not judge the entire animal rights group on the ALF, so please do not judge all Foie Gras farms on the limited number of old videos out there.

That and it would contodict what you were saying earlier about all the fat cats filling their faces( which implies that there would not be two stood outside protesting) you think that because people are rich they are cruel to animals this is not the case! the richer you are the more humane and quality food you can buy instead of the chicken farmed meat at 2 pound a pop!

I do not judge the entire animal rights group on the ALF, so please do not judge all Foie Gras farms on the limited number of old videos out there.
thank you, very interesting
Hence what i've been trying to tell you! but no you are in the right and all people who eat something they like are in the wrong!

Agreed as well! If you want to protest about foie gras then fair enough - it's an issue of animal welfare and quite controversial - but go to France and the farms that produce it rather than picking on a random restaurant and it's customers.

While I think it's a good thing that the barbarism of force feeding geese is brought to the public's attention, I believe this should be done in a passive, informative way, which will allow people to decide for themselves whether they want to eat fois gras or not.

So, it turns out that one of the vegan world's most respected authority (Dr Gabriel Cousins) doesn't think it's an 'ideal' diet as it would appear that if you don't get enough B12, then it turns you into a pasty-faced, feeble minded weakling.
AND....all those algae versions of B12 aren't good enough.
AND...if you have a baby and don't supplement the child with B12, then you deserve a very nasty punishment.

As long as the rules of consumer capitalism apply, it's acceptable? If it's available to buy then it's my choice and automatically precluded from any moral debate? Because economics is and always has been an ethical and fair system with the best interests of all parties at it's very core?
*cough******cough*
Now if you don't mind i'm off out to buy some heroin, an uzi, and a teenage prostitute and if any fascist hippy protester tries to stop me and force their dirty soapdodging opinion down my throat i'll "go at them with a meat cleaver" or something.

Surely its up to a business to provide whatever its customers choose within the law. Tonnes of businesses sell potentially inethnical products because some people want them. If you dont, dont buy them and perhaps a drop in demand will make them think again. Otherwise mind your own. Do hardcore horselovers refuse to go into any french butchers because they all sell horsemeat? No they just buy other stuff.

Does this re-think involve anything actually being done. The problem has been highlighted, but only because celebrities stepped in.
