Rail campaign gathers pace

CAMPAIGNERS pushing for the reintroduction of an historic railway link between York and Beverley are hoping Government ministers will further their cause after a parliamentary debate today.

Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, and a long-time supporter of the Minsters' Rail Campaign (MRC), was due to raise the issue during an adjournment debate in parliament attended by ministers.

A spokesman for the MRC said transport in the region was to be "centre stage" during the debate.

George McManus, chairman of the MRC, said ministers would need to listen while Mr Stuart and other MPs put the case forward for increased spending on transport in the region.

Mr McManus said a feasibility study published by East Riding of Yorkshire Council showed that a reopened railway would be economic and would make a positive impact on regeneration in the area.

He said: "We very much look forward to this debate, as engaging with parliamentarians will be key to our success.

"We hope the ministers will be persuaded of the veracity of our case."

He said the campaigners had recently seen further evidence of the "shocking toll" being taken by the A1079 road - and that they were convinced that reopening the line would help alleviate that.

Mr Stuart said: "East Riding of Yorkshire Council commissioned a study in 2004 that showed reopening the line would have a positive cost benefit outcome.

"And yet last year, in another debate I secured, the then transport minister said that the Government had no intention of taking it forward, so this is just part of a long campaign to get a fairer funding deal for Yorkshire.

"That road from Beverley to York is an inadequate road that needs investment, and a potential railway line which is cost effective can contribute to the regeneration of Hull and this whole area."

A Department for Transport spokeswoman said: "Reopening old lines is not necessary to meet the growth in demand for rail travel.

"However, local authorities can fund line reopenings if they believe this is the best way of addressing local transport issues."

This is the type of campaigning I can respect - campaigning for the creation of something that will benefit others, rather than just campaigning against things changing in a modern society.

If the campaign against the previous change (closing the line in the first place) had succeeded, this new one wouldn't be necessary...

I agree though; good luck to the Minsters Rail Campaign, reopening that route will be good for just about everyone.

Another Beeching Report casualty? I don't think many protests across various parts of the country in those days succeeded.

Perhaps if it extended to Hull,and be hourly, that would be more in keeping with the present day needs?.

It would continue to hull as it would joint the Hull Bridlington Seamer line, ....if it was made.

"the Butler" said the service should go to Hull. A service between York and Beverley should be at least hourly and form part of the existing train service between Beverley and Hull. Might need an extra bay platform at Beverley and some more siding space at York.

I can see that having no connection to the rail network and being on the wrong side of York for the rail station will do wonders for rail demand from the fast growing A1079 corridor.

Will the DfT carry on promoting roads (never on the A1079 corridor) at fifteen times the rate they are building more environmentally friendly rail links?

Whilst I wish them well, quite a bit of the former track bed has been built on, which is an added complication.

Reopening a rail link to Beverley would definately ease traffic on the 1079. Why not also campaign to reopen stations at Haxby & Strensall, I'm sure residents there would appreciate a faster route into York instead of waiting in the Gillygate gridlock on a packed bus.

I remember using this line as a child to go to Bridlington. We had to change at Beverley. The train would leave York along the Scarborough line and then veer off just north of the Rowntrees factory. It crossed the A64 next to 'Vertigrow'. It's only in recent years that the bridge carrying the A64 has been demolished. As Peter states, I suspect that there has been too much 'undone' for this to become a reality. But I wish it well.
