A DENTAL practice in York is expanding - and it could take on more NHS patients in the future.

Oasis Dental Care Ltd is moving from its site in Micklegate to Swinson House in Station Business Park, Holgate Park Road.

The move will enable Oasis to double its capacity.

It currently has three dental surgeries and one hygiene surgery but at its new home there will be six dental surgeries and two hygiene surgeries.

Lynn Wilson, practice manager at Oasis in Micklegate, said: "Currently we have about 13,000 patients on our books. We will be taking on new patients and we may be taking on more NHS patients."

Ms Wilson said this was dependent on North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust (PCT) providing the business with more money.

"If we secure more, then the chances are we can take on more NHS patients," she said.

The premises that Oasis will move into have been vacant for three years and were formerly offices.

The firm applied to change the use of the site to a dental practice.

The practice will be open from Monday to Friday 8.30am to 7.30pm and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays. It is set to open its doors on April 21.

As of the end of February, there were 5,211 York and Selby people on the waiting list for a dentist and since January, 1,104 patients have been found dental places.

Jane Marshall, North Yorkshire and York PCT's Director of Commissioning and Service Development, said: "Although NHS dentistry has received a fair amount of bad press recently, here in North Yorkshire people have access to very good services and the majority of people who want NHS care can get it. Anyone who is still in need of an NHS dentist should contact the PCT so that we can accommodate you."

Anyone who needs an NHS dentist can add their name to the waiting list on the PCT's website at www.nyypct.nhs.uk, by email: nyy-pct.dentalregistration@nhs.net, or by phoning 01904 724107.

Let's hope they take on competent, english-fluent, dentists then.

(Unlike Clockhouse!)

Be patient.

I was on the list and was told it would be approximately 6 months.

Six months later - I now have a dentist. You don't hear anything until a dentist phones you offering you a place.

English fluent doesn't really matter too much, does it? I'd rather have my teeth looked at and sorted by someone competent and unintelligible, than someone with a nice accent and a record of filling the wrong teeth . . .

My polish dentist has very acceptable "Dental English", far better than my social Polish!

Coincidence that when they announce they are taking more people on that the on-line waiting list application is no longer available.....

Last time I applied I was told I earned too much and should go private as they were prioritizing those who sat on their backsides all day long and did nothing and that I'd always be at the end of the list...

I have to agree with Mr. Sheen. It really does matter if the dentist does speak english. If you have a breakdown of communication, the time and effort it has taken you to see that dentist is then wasted if you cannot have all of your problems solved due to mis-communication. I have heard in some practices in york (clockhouse) the nurses have to translate for the dentists.. How is that ethical???

The NHS is failing. To meety demand dentists operate a rotating door service with absolute sub-standard levels of treatment and controlled neglect. They have to get cheap labour in to meet the demand in practices beacuse no sensible and caring dentist would want to work in such an un-ethical practices.... It doesn't matter how good someone CV is. If they are a dentist be it of any standard it doesn't matter.
