POLICE in a York suburb are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a night-time tyre slashing spree.

Residents in Westminster Road, Cromer Street and Falsgrave Crescent, in Clifton, woke up yesterday morning to find the tyres had been slashed on many of their cars.

In total, 15 cars were hit in the spree, which has been condemned by local councillors.

Labour ward councillor Ken King said: "It's downright disgraceful that yobs can go around causing damage like this to people's vehicles. It's not just the costs, it's time consuming, and I hope that the police do catch the people responsible and the CPS do prosecute these yobs.

"If someone was to damage their vehicles or their parents' vehicles, they'd be the first to be screaming.

"I will be doing everything I can to help the police with this.

"I hope the residents of Clifton help the police to bring these individuals to the courts."

PC Matt Smith, neighbourhood community officer for Clifton, said: "This is obviously unacceptable behaviour and we are looking for people in the local community to come forward with any information they might have.

"We are putting a lot of resources into catching whoever was responsible for this."

As part of the operation, a mobile police station was set up on Clifton Green for members of the public to come along with information.

The problem is not a new one in Clifton. In 2006, about 90 motorists in Clifton woke one morning in November to find their cars had been attacked, with tyres slashed, windows smashed and mirrors knocked off.

On that occasion, police were forced to set up a dedicated mobile station and hotline for victims, and later held public meetings to address residents' fears.

The Press reported how the Crown Prosecution Service had decided not to pursue a case against a 17-year-old who was arrested over the spree.

The CPS defended its decision, saying that the facts of each case faced two tests.

These were, whether there was enough evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and was it in the public interest to pursue it."

But the decision sparked anger and frustration in the community, according to David Nicholson, chairman of the Joint Committee of Clifton Ward Residents' Associations.

There is no justice system in this country. "Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime", this country is a joke. These scumbags do what they like without concern for anyone as they know they are untouchable. I say up yours to their human rights, chop their hands off and bring back public hanging. That might make them think twice! And put it on Sky pay per view after the fooball, would be great.

I agree with both Fergie and Walt. I would gladly take on the job as hangman. I would even work for free. The decent people of York and the rest ok the UK, need to take their country back from the scumbags that get away with murder.

Jo, York says...

The biggest problem is catching them. They don't do it every night, their pattern is not predictable and it's simply impossible to have police hiding in wait every night for them to do it again.

And anyone who suggests vigilante justice is a complete moron by the way.

Suprised the police didn't attempt to issue 15 penalty notices for un-roadworthy cars when they got there. Sure this one will get filed away as quickly as possible so they can go toss it off on a training course or just doing what they do best and sit around with their tallywhackers in their hands.

i have a failsafe plan for this,it may or may not catch on,
just take all four wheels off on a night, putthem at the bottom of the stairs or somewhere safe and hey presto! in the morning refit and no slashed tyres,
Its possible to change four tyres in 8 seconds ive seen it on tv at racetracks !

The police would go after the vigilantes not the scum who did the damage.

Why?

There is no other justice in this country today.

It is unfortunately syptomatic of the problems that exist within our society today.. Thanks to the incessant bleating of a veritable "army" of do-gooders amid threats of the European Court of Human Rights, we have found ourselves the the unique position of having a judicial system geared around protecting the rights of a few poor, misguided individuals who.. lets be honest, could have benefited from public flogging years ago.

The problem as far as I can see, is that increasingly the perpetrators of such some might say "petty" crime are often to be found as second or third generation "scum". Parented in many cases by people who's idea of chastisement comes in the form of a string of expletives hurled at the "child" when it gets in the way of the consumption of alchol or class "A" drugs.

In certain countries, get caught stealing.. you will have your hand removed... The result.. very little crime.!

In Britain.. put people in a young offenders institution where conditions are often much better than that of the family home... Where's the adequate form of deterrent.?

It's about time that the CPS learnt that the phrase "Not in Public Interest" was scrapped, might be a bit different if one of them or the magistrates were the victims

I've worked with these kids round the areas of clifton & huntington road and Fergie's solutions that we should chop of their hands and bring back public hangings IS THE ONLY SOLUTION :) :D

All you need to do is work out which scumbags got their benefits at the same time as the last tyre slashings. They no doubt went out drinking and did it on the way home.

After last years tyre slashing, someone was caught by the Police , with the help of the Public, as it should be. The CPS are the ones who decided not to prosecute, not the Police. And yes if somebody takes the law in to their own hands then what do you expect the Police to do , ignore it? No they will investigate and then its the CPS who will say its not in the public interest to prosecute!! do you know what I mean, wink , wink. Its not big and its not clever.

THIS IS THE EXACT REASON WE MOVED FROM CROMER ST LAST MONTH!
Sick of reporting incidents and nothing being done. Then they catch the little sh1te that did it and CPS let 'em off!
Feel for the people it's happened to, but I'm SOOOOO glad i'm away from there now.
