FLOWERS and messages have been left at the spot where a teenager was killed after her bicycle collided with a lorry.

Ruby Milnes, 17, died on Thursday in a car park behind York Racecourse, off Bishopthorpe Road. It is thought she was cycling on the Sustrans Selby to York cycle path when she was hit by the Shepherd lorry, which is believed to have been delivering Portaloos to the racecourse.

About a dozen bouquets have been placed at the spot where she lost her life along with a graffiti board where messages have been left in her memory.

Staff at her former school have also paid tribute, as has one of her friends, Vicki Dawson, 17, of Holgate, York.

Vicki attended Millthorpe School with Ruby and had the same group of friends.

She said: "She was always happy, there was always a smile on her face. She was a very individual person, every time she wore something different and she had a lot of time for a lot of people as well."

Vicki said Ruby, who was studying at York College, liked dressing in vintage clothes and was very much her own person, not caring what others thought.

She said: "She was a good lass. There are people who were a lot closer to her than me, but she was a good friend."

Tony Wootton, head teacher of Millthorpe School, said: "Ruby Milnes left Millthorpe School less than a year ago and the whole school community is shocked and saddened by the news of her death.

"Ruby was a delightful student: popular, bright, intelligent with an engaging streak of individuality. The thoughts and prayers of the whole school community go out to Ruby's family and particularly to her brother and sisters still at Millthorpe."

A message left at the scene of the accident reads: "Thank you for reminding us how sacred every day is. Sadly missed, never forgotten."

Another reads: "We are going to miss you so much. You are such a lovely special person. Miss you sweetheart, lots and lots of love," while a third says, "Rubby Duck, you'll never be forgotten."

The accident happened at 4.30pm on Thursday and anyone who witnessed the collision between her cycle and the lorry is asked to phone York Police on 0845 6060247.

Ruby,
Some of your acquaintances visited our Windmill in Holgate during the recent open weekend, and said what a lovely lass you were. As a local cycle campaigner, I was devasted to learn the outline circumstances of the tragedy. I will fight for visiblilty and other improvements, to ensure that the majority of Sustrans path users here, are properly protected from occasional motor vehicle movements across the route.

I was saddened to learn of this tragedy and my thoughts are with Ruby's friends and family. I regularly use the path where this incident happened and was moved yesterday to read the tributes which have been left for Ruby. This path is at a very popular spot which is used by hundreds of cyclists and people walking their dogs every day and it's hard to believe that such a horrific accident could have happened here. I only hope the resulting enquiry will be handled sensitively and in a measured way and without undue speculation, which will only add to the distress of people close to Ruby. I also hope it will lead to moves which will guarantee the safety of cyclists and pedestrians who use this path in future and I wish Paul Hepworth the best of luck with his campaign.

Like her name, Ruby Milnes was a jewel of a young woman. She was brilliant. She shone. She sparkled. She had integrity and depth. She had many facets and was unlike any other. And she radiated warmth and vitality to everyone, because she was one of those rare people who has time for everyone. Our world is a sadder place without Ruby in it but at least we have her memory to treasure, and her example to be inspired by. The Velody Family, London.

I didn't know Ruby personally, but I used to live on Bishophill and remember her as a toddler with her siblings in a fabulous pram, pushed by her very stylish mum. I was so so sorry to hear about this most tragic accident.Losing a child is so very hard to cope with. Such a happy, lovely, ideyllic family who will be suffering such tremendous pain and shock. Thoughts are with her parents and brothers & sisters at this very sad time.

Ruby was the most beautiful, wonderful person I've ever been lucky enough to meet.
She was the best friend I've ever had and I still can not get my head around the fact that she's gone.
It is so cruel that she has been stolen from us.

Ruby, I love this girl with all of my heart she is not only my big sister but a hero, a person to come to when you have a worry, she will always make them better. I loved the way I could brush her hair and she would smile, then turn around and give me a big warm hug. Ruby is so clever and amazingly preaty that a photograph is to small it cant even try to contain her beauty. I will never forget my big sister not ever. I LOVE RUBY GARLEND. She will always be in my heart. I just wish that she could get married and have children or buy a house. Her family misses her dearly ,me, my brothers,my sister, my mum and dad and her lovely boy-friend Karl.

My first memory of Ruby was extraordinary- a young girl singing with such exuberance that she stood out from the crowd. She seemed to carry such joy wherever she went. We are very fortunate and privileged to have known such a glorious girl.

(From Hope)

Ruby was a very big part in my life. She was my idol and I never got to tell her how much I loved her. Every outfit she wore, each colour of her hair made me think, ‘Wow, this girl is absolutely amazing. I want to be like her.’ She was so unique and such an individual. She wasn’t afraid to be her own person and do things her own way in her own style. She was extraordinarily beautiful and amazing in every single way possible. In fact, in my eyes, she was perfect. She was. One of the most amazing things about Ruby was that she was so empathetic and always thought about others before herself. That’s how amazing Ruby was. Almost everyone in York knew her and appreciated her lovely smile and her magnificent outfits. She often changed the colour of her hair, every single time – colour or shape – she managed to make herself look like a model. She could make a supermodel look plain! Ruby was my all time favourite teenager – and I will never forget her She had the face of an angel. She was my hero. My idol. And I never got to thank her for that. I love you Ruby, you will forever be in my heart. Goodbye Rube, I’ll miss you x

Friends Until The End

We used to talk,
We used to laugh,
We were friends,
I thought that’s how it would always be,
You taught me so much,
Told me what to say,
I wish it were still the same,
But someday I know it will,
Maybe not today,
But we’ll meet again,
It won’t be long,
until I see your face,
In Heaven,
that marvelous day.
