AN investigation is underway after a suspected arson attack on two lorries in North Yorkshire in which one driver escaped with his life.

A lorry driver had a lucky escape when his cab was targeted in a suspected arson attack at the Dragon Road lorry park at Asda in Harrogate shortly after 9.30pm last night.

The man is thought to have been sleeping in one of two lorries involved in the blaze which is now under investigation by police.

Four fire crews were called to put out the fire. The nearby main road and York to Harrogate railway line were closed while the blaze was brought under control.

The driver was not injured and North Yorkshire Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward and contact 0845 6060247.

I seem to remember 15 years or so ago the news making a big deal out of someone who was being let out of prison after they had been given a life sentence in the 1960s for setting fire to a barn – no livestock, animal or human were involved.

We’ve gone soft since then, so arsonists who deliberately try to kill someone by setting them alight are simply ‘pranksters’ (particularly if they knowingly make themselves drunk first to justify their actions).

The police have probably dropped this case already. What’s the point in investigating arson, burglary, muggings, etc. when the courts just let them straight back onto the streets.
