EMERGENCY services and council chiefs were on standby last night, after a warning of potential extreme weather in East Yorkshire.

The Met Office warned of "severe to extreme" weather across the region last night and today.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council's emergency preparedness team met yesterday afternoon to discuss the situation.

A council spokeswoman said: "Extra council staff have been drafted in and are on standby to respond should any localised flooding occur as a result of the potential rainfall. The council is also working with Humber Fire and Rescue, Humberside Police, the Environment Agency and Yorkshire Water, to ensure that any areas that may be at risk are supported.

"The council would like to emphasise that we are taking a proactive approach to the situation and all measures are precautionary."

Further information and advice is available on the council's website at www.eastriding.gov.uk or by phoning the customer service network on 01482 393399.

East Yorkshire was extremely badly hit by last summer's floods.
