Vandals ordered to remove graffiti from York bridge

YOUTHS caught spraying graffiti on a York bridge have been made to clean up their act.

Two 14-year-old boys who were arrested after their graffiti tags were found on Love Lane bridge, which links Barbara Grove and Driffield Terrace, near the Mount School, were put to work cleaning them off yesterday.

In March, The Press reported that a permanent anti-graffiti coating, which does not damage the walls, was applied to the bridge to make graffiti removal easier.

City of York Council and North Yorkshire Police are working together to clean up the area.

Police also plan to make regular patrols of the bridge to reduce antisocial behaviour. Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Kimberley Copestake, of the Micklegate Safer Neighbourhoods Team, said: "I hope this sends out a message to teenagers and their parents that if they are caught then they will be putting in the time to clear it up."

Clair Bailey, City of York Council's street environment officer for Micklegate ward, said: "This work is costing £1,000 for the paint and the labour and we paid the same amount in March to do a similar job so that's £2,000 in the past four months. That money is coming out of the council tax and wouldn't need to be spent otherwise.

"We hope to make the lane look and feel safer for users of the bridge and deter people from spoiling this area.

"We would encourage anyone who spots any antisocial behaviour to report it immediately to the council or police." Love Lane resident Ben Arnup, who has cleaned up graffiti on the bridge previously himself, said people who use the bridge regularly go quiet when crossing when it is covered in graffiti.

He said: "The difference in people's attitude is noticeable when the bridge is clean. People are intimidated by the mess and the vandalism."

The mobile police station was on hand nearby yesterday for any regular users of the bridge who wish to discuss issues of concern.

The council has been working with Network Rail and the Mount School to reduce litter and graffiti at the site.

The Press told in December last year how frustrated local ward councillors had urged the council to try to find a long-term solution to the problem of graffiti in Love Lane.

Every time this bridge is in the news, i.e. repeatedly over a period of years, I've wearily said the same thing: repainting in uniform grey is presenting a blank canvas, which inevitably attracts graffiti. I've seen the result of painting an underpass in bright, jazzy, jagged patterns - the vandals gave up because their efforts could hardly be seen.

She looks far too caring in the picture - she should have the whip out so she can dispense a good beating if they start to slack in their cleaning!!

I agree that the money should be reclaimed from the parents. It might make them keep their little brats in line from now on!!

When any criminal is caught, i belive they should be humiliated in public. I would not stop at the simply cleaning off the mess they made. They should be paraded up and down their street, so the entire neighbour hood knows exactly the sort of people they are living next to. I would also have conns working in chain gangs to allow members of the public to spit and boo at them as they pass by. sorry but the time has come to stop bleating on about human rights tackle crime head on.

prob, either too scared to show their face or quite simply dont give a hoot as their benefit cheq is due soon - enough to buy little billy another new mobile phone as a reward for been good and cleaning up the mess. I would be interested to know what their parents would actually think if they could read these comments. surely some one must be able to suggest they read these comments we are all posting.

Maybe the parents can't stop things like this, maybe the parents are lawyers and playwrites and scientists and theyre children just got into a bit of a bad crowd, maybe there are much worse crimes than grafiti and maybe your horrible steriotypes do more damage than good to the KIDS that are impressionable and probably in some cases more vunerable than you think
blaming parents is a dreadful thing to do as it could happen to anyones kids, and I hope that the people who agree with blaming the parents for this, experience how kids follow their own tracks, you dont have to be from a council estate to be a vandal, drug dealer or theif.
I hope you, sat at home with your nice cars and house feel proud for generalising and putting down kids, and havng a good old **** at the part of our society with less money than you.
