MORE than 60 roads could get flashing speed signs or other traffic calming measures in a bid to slow drivers down.

And City of York Council’s officers have revealed eight locations in the York area which it is felt would benefit from speed humps or other traffic calming schemes.

These are: Four Lane Ends, York Road and Common Road, all in Dunnington; New Lane, in Huntington; Bishopthorpe Road; Layerthorpe; Oaken Grove, in Haxby, and Gale Lane, in Acomb.

A study is also to be conducted into whether York and the rest of the county would benefit from introducing more mobile speed cameras.

Over the last six months 94 speeding concerns have been raised by residents, councillors and parish councils about a total of 63 roads in the area.

Just eight of those 63 reach the criteria for traffic calming measures to be introduced, although the other 55 locations may be visited by flashing speed signs.

One option is for the flashing speed signs to be loaned to local community groups so they can take a hands-on look at the issues in their area. The council said it hopes to purchase two of the flashing speed signs which, after training, could be used by community groups on roads with a speed limit of 40mph or less.

But a more controversial issue would be the introduction of more mobile speed cameras into the county.

The 95 Alive Partnership, which was set up with City of York Council, North Yorkshire County Council, the police, the fire service and the Highways Agency, is to begin a feasibility study on their introduction.

The findings will be revealed in January.
