Coach driver arrested following Staxton accident

2:33pm Tuesday 23rd September 2008

POLICE have arrested the driver of a coach involved in a weekend crash which killed two people on a North Yorkshire road.

The 52-year-old, who is from Staffordshire, was taken into custody this morning in connection with the collision, having previously been treated in hospital for a wrist injury following the tragedy at Staxton crossroads on the A64 between Malton and Scarborough.

A man and a woman killed when the grey Volkswagen Passat they were travelling in collided with the coach at around 9am on Sunday were expected to be named today.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “A number of witnesses have now come forward, but officers are still trying to trace the last movements of the Passat.

“They still want to speak to anybody who was in the area of Staxton crossroads or heading towards the junction on any of the adjoining roads who remembers seeing the Passat or the coach in the minutes leading up to the crash.”

Anybody with any information should call Scarborough Road Policing Group on 0845 6060 247.
