BURGLARS and drug dealers should start looking over their shoulders as the police launch a targeted campaign against them.

Officers are to target so-called “quality of life” crimes like break-ins, drugs and anti-social behaviour which blight people’s lives and bring misery.

The hard-hitting campaign – which has been dubbed Operation Drystone – will see suspects targeted day and night across York and North Yorkshire and officers providing a visible presence on the streets.

A spokeswoman for the police said tactics will vary from dawn raids to pub patrols, undercover to high-profile policing, but central to the campaign will be the targeting of offenders who bring misery to local communities.

Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell said: “Drystone is all about building safer neighbourhoods and the public are absolutely crucial to this campaign because they can provide us with vital information.

“We will be focusing on those, such as drug dealers and burglars, who bring misery to our neighbourhoods.

“But we will also be targeting crimes such as antisocial behaviour and shed theft. These are dismissed by some as minor, but they are not minor to the victims or the areas they blight and at North Yorkshire Police we do not regard crimes against our communities as minor.”

Mr Maxwell said North Yorkshire had one of the lowest crime rates in the country.

He said: “We intend to keep it that way by giving our public what they want; a visible, accessible police force which is on the side of the law abiding majority.”

Posters highlighting Operation Drystone will feature officers at work in the wide range of backdrops that make up the force area.

“North Yorkshire Police has the largest and probably the most geographically diverse force area in the country,” said Mr Maxwell.

“But whether we are patrolling city estates or country villages, coastal towns or moorland farms, our aim is the same, to build up safer neighbourhoods by delivering modern policing in a traditional way.”

And when they do catch them the courts will give them a slap on the wrists and send them back out on the streets, it's time theses people were taught a lesson

You see this is where the problem lies,
"BURGLARS and drug dealers should start looking over their shoulders as the police launch a targeted campaign against them".

Which says to me, upto now we haven't bothered with you, but don't let us catch you again, or else buster.

We don't need campaigns to sort this scum out, just regular police work and putting the bobbies back on the beat would do just fine.

'Get the Blighters'?
It sounds like something a 1960s bobby might shout, as chasing children who've just been caught scrumping apples

I agree with Heppy. It's the courts that need a reality check. The police must get so fed up of doing their job only to find the dealers back on the streets the next day.

How come all the drug users in York know where to buy drugs from and the police do not ???

Sounds like a good idea, but is this not what the police should be doing as there regular job, not a special operation?

Also, as has been pointed out, its all very well the police catching them, but with our completely out of touch with reality CPS department, they will either not get charged or let off with a caution.

If I were a crook, I'd hardly be quaking in my boots.

Anyone arrested for burglary should be held in custody until the trial. Then the courts should jail the buggers.
Too many times we read in the papers about further crimes being committed whilst these oxygen thieves are out on bail!

The amount of heroin dealing that goes on outside parliament street toilets and around stonebow is beyond belief. Every day there is between 20/30 drug/alcohol addicts in this area. Why cant the police do something?

I agree! Never mind the fact that they'll spend their 6 months downtime learning new robbery techniques from hardened cons or develop an even worse drug habit.

OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND.

I don't believe that the police don't know who the drug dealers are. It is common knowledge in certain places who the big drug dealers are and they are just left to get on with it by the police. I know of at least two apparently respectable people who deal in drugs, which is why they have so much money and the police must just turn a blind eye!

So what have they been targetting in the past then, except motorists that is. This police force is diabolical

Actually its just a complete waste of time and money , legalize and control drugs (google)its a good enough starting point,
Its the only way,

Once they are caught they should be properly punished and not let out of prison halfway through their sentences, which are very light anyway.

It dosn't help though, Prisons are at bursting point and people who have commited more serious crimes are not getting a sentance they deserve, Often walking free.

I agree with what Chewing Gum says but, if they had more severe punishments, to fit the crimes, they might be less inclined to go to prison again.
There should be some way to get round this situation.

They should be sent to prison for the first offence were they are trained in a trade and only released once they have qualified in the trade and have got a job to go to

Why do the police need these action stances? Its all wanting a good spin on the hard work they do, but wouldn't a story saying the police have caught so many drug dealers in York be a better story then what reads as We will try and find them?

Waste of time and money, so is someone due for elction and wanting some good PR or is this just so they can raise the Police precept on the council tax claiming that they are reducing crime when actually for every crime reported one isn't?

I think the whole point of this campaign though is to prove that its not going to be as easy for the burgalers and dealers do go about there buisness. Which sadly, at the moment it is too easy for them. Even if they are taken to court and only given a slap on the wrist, the community service and suspended sentence combined with an increased police prescence SHOULD make them think twice...

Boadicea, York says...

I'm agree with what York1900 says "get some stocks"
