BURGLARS and drug dealers should start looking over their shoulders as the police launch a targeted campaign against them.
Officers are to target so-called “quality of life” crimes like break-ins, drugs and anti-social behaviour which blight people’s lives and bring misery.
The hard-hitting campaign – which has been dubbed Operation Drystone – will see suspects targeted day and night across York and North Yorkshire and officers providing a visible presence on the streets.
A spokeswoman for the police said tactics will vary from dawn raids to pub patrols, undercover to high-profile policing, but central to the campaign will be the targeting of offenders who bring misery to local communities.
Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell said: “Drystone is all about building safer neighbourhoods and the public are absolutely crucial to this campaign because they can provide us with vital information.
“We will be focusing on those, such as drug dealers and burglars, who bring misery to our neighbourhoods.
“But we will also be targeting crimes such as antisocial behaviour and shed theft. These are dismissed by some as minor, but they are not minor to the victims or the areas they blight and at North Yorkshire Police we do not regard crimes against our communities as minor.”
Mr Maxwell said North Yorkshire had one of the lowest crime rates in the country.
He said: “We intend to keep it that way by giving our public what they want; a visible, accessible police force which is on the side of the law abiding majority.”
Posters highlighting Operation Drystone will feature officers at work in the wide range of backdrops that make up the force area.
“North Yorkshire Police has the largest and probably the most geographically diverse force area in the country,” said Mr Maxwell.
“But whether we are patrolling city estates or country villages, coastal towns or moorland farms, our aim is the same, to build up safer neighbourhoods by delivering modern policing in a traditional way.”

Anyone arrested for burglary should be held in custody until the trial. Then the courts should jail the buggers. Too many times we read in the papers about further crimes being committed whilst these oxygen thieves are out on bail!

It is common knowledge in certain places who the big drug dealers are and they are just left to get on with it by the police. I know of at least two apparently respectable people who deal in drugs, which is why they have so much money and the police must just turn a blind eye!
How come all the drug users in York know where to buy drugs from and the police do not ???

Sounds like a good idea, but is this not what the police should be doing as there regular job, not a special operation? Also, as has been pointed out, its all very well the police catching them, but with our completely out of touch with reality CPS department, they will either not get charged or let off with a caution. If I were a crook, I'd hardly be quaking in my boots.

Once they are caught they should be properly punished and not let out of prison halfway through their sentences, which are very light anyway.
