A 93-YEAR-OLD woman is still fighting for her life in intensive care following a suspected arson attack on her Harrogate home.
Police investigating the incident, which happened at about 7.20pm on Saturday, in Newby Crescent, have renewed their appeal for witnesses.
Detective Inspector Heather Pearson said the elderly woman was originally from China, but had lived in Harrogate for a number of years.
She said there was no suggestion at this stage the incident was racially motivated.
She said: “This is an extremely serious incident and one which could still have tragic consequences. It is important that the offender or offenders are arrested as soon as possible and brought to justice for endangering lives.
“The crucial period we are looking at is between 6pm and 8pm. I urge all witnesses or anyone who was in the area at the time to contact the police immediately.
“Even the smallest piece of information could prove vital to the investigation.”
The 93-year-old, who remains in a critical condition having suffered smoke inhalation, was in a ground-floor flat at the time of the fire.
Two cats in the upstairs flat at the time of the incident died due to the smoke. It is believed the fire was started in a dustbin in front of the entrance doors to the flats.
A mobile police station is located in Newby Crescent and residents are encouraged to call in to help the inquiry.
Witnesses or anyone with information should phone Harrogate CID on 0845 6060247.
Alternatively, information can be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
