A HAVE-a-go hero who stopped a pensioner’s “lifeline” from being stolen has said he is just glad he could be of help.

The man, who wants to remain anonymous, intervened when he saw a youth pushing a moped along a street late at night. But after challenging him he was beaten up by a gang of the youth’s friends.

As reported in The Press, the 50cc scooter had been stolen from a shed belonging to 81-year-old Cecilia Igoe, of Thanet Road, York. Mrs Igoe, who has problems walking, described the scooter as her lifeline to the outside world.

Now the man has been in touch with The Press to reassure Mrs Igoe that he is fine and explain what happened at 12.30am on October 11.

He said: “I was on my way home and I saw a big group of lads together and saw one of them stealing the scooter. I ran over to stop him and I grabbed hold of him then about eight others jumped on top of me and they started punching and kicking me. I got a black eye and I felt really dizzy. I just wanted to let Mrs Igoe know I’m fine. I did have to have a few days off work but I’m okay now.

“I don’t think I am a hero, I was just doing what was right; what anyone should do. I am really pleased that she has got her scooter back. Youths shouldn’t be allowed to get away with carrying on and acting like that, carry on as they please. I’m just glad I could help.”

Mrs Igoe contacted The Press to thank the man for intervening and express her concern that he had been attacked. She said it was a “great relief” to know the man was safe and well.

Anyone who has any information regarding the theft and subsequent assault should phone North Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060247.

No, she just lives on Thanet Road where you're more likely to get hit on the head than filling cash machines!
