THE first steam locomotive to be built in Britain for almost 50 years hauled its final test run last night.

The £3 million 60163 Tornado, built by The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, ran from York to Newcastle and back again.

Mark Allatt, chairman of The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust said: “Yesterday was another historic day for Tornado. The train has already had two successful main line test runs, witnessed by hundreds of our supporters. Tornado’s test runs are all part of the preparation for her Network Rail passenger début in the new year.”

Tornado is now set to reside at York’s National Railway Museum’s until February.

I live in Durham and I heard it go over the Viaduct yesterday. It's a sound we don't hear enough! Wish I could have seen it!

They'd probably think he's a terrorist and arrest him.

Still too many enthusiasts using flash photography at night. This can be very distracting and potentially unsafe for Tornado's crew, plus any other train drivers in the vicinity. Use of flash is not permitted on Network Rail property, and is to be discouraged from lineside vantage points as well.
Otherwise a splendid technical achievment by the A1 Society.

You've advocated cycling on the grounds of preventing Co2 emissions ad nauseam in response to other stories. Burning many tons of fossil fuel to boil water to drive a piston by steam pressure isn't exactly environmentally friendly, is it? In fact, it has to be one of the most inefficient forms of mechanised transport ever devised. I'd have expected you to condemn this project as environmental vandalism, not congratulate it.

Well said Guy. The Pedalling Pillock seems a little bit of a hypocrite...

I once asked a question about missing plutonium at a talk on the UK's atomic energy industry, plus a separate question about the dangers of eating locally caught fish near Windcscale. One wag suggested that if I ate some of that fish, I'd become the world's first nuclear powered cyclist...and glow in the dark as a useful side effect!!
Incidentally Tornado is going into the NRM paint shop soon, to receive its final LNER apple green livery. And very splendid it will look too!

where are they getting the coal from to run it? are there still productive mines in this country or will it be imported from China like every thing else or maybe it's some that has been stockpiled since the mines closed down, but apart from that litle detail I think that it is a brilliant piece of engineering well done to all who worked on it ,I only hope that they can keep it running for many years and that they keep the fares reasonable so the ordinary general public will be able to enjoy riding on it

I was very surprised to see that the interviewer seemed to be oblivious to the fact that the man in the high vis vest was trespassing. How can we keep kids off the track when adults think it's ok. He has been reported by several people to the Transport Police.
