BUDDING astronomers are invited to a free event tonight to learn how to get the best out of their telescopes.

The event – called A Telescope is for Life, Not Just for Christmas – will be held at York Observatory, in Museum Gardens, from 6pm to 8pm.

Yorkshire Museum’s astronomer, Martin Lunn, and members of York Astronomical Society will be giving out some top tips on using telescopes. Visitors will also have a chance to try out the observatory’s powerful telescope.

Martin said: “A lot of people get a telescope for Christmas, but sometimes they are disregarded quite quickly, as it can be quite difficult to get the best from them.

“We will be here to help people get to grips with their new telescope and hopefully, if the night is clear, inspire people by showing them the magic of the night sky.” To book a place, phone 01904 650333.

York Observatory will also be open on January 10 and February 7 for special “moonwatch” evenings. For more information about upcoming astronomical events, log on to www.yorkshiremuseum.org.uk
