THE cash was already rolling in as the people of York “did something funny for money” on Red Nose Day. Hundreds of businesses, organisations and individuals have been indulging in weird and wacky behaviour to raise funds for today’s Comic Relief event.
Staff at the Bootham branch of Sainsbury’s have so far raised £1,100 through selling kisses, hosting quizzes and parading through York dressed as doctors and nurses. Meanwhile, their colleagues from Sainsbury’s Monks Cross were out selling red noses on the streets of York, and hoping to add more to the £4,000 which the store has brought in so far.
At Lamel Beeches nursing home, in Heslington Road, staff managed to get plenty of people to part with their cash with a fancy dress bed push through the streets earlier this week. Manager Joanne King said: “We have held various activities all week and raised £152 and we are hoping to raise more than £200.”
York businessman Dave Dee sported red hair and a beard all week, raising £100. While the curly red hair may not be his own, the beard is and today will see him finally shave it off.
“It’s driving him mad,” said his wife, Anne. “The beard has really been itching him.”
