Updated: A MAJOR North Yorkshire road was closed for three hours after a lorry carrying meat shed its load across the carriageway.

Emergency services shut the A170 yesterday in both directions at Sutton Bank, near Thirsk, when a rear door fell off a lorry, causing it to lose its full load of 900lb of packaged meat, as it started to climb the steep hill.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said a car travelling behind the lorry was hit on the windscreen by the broken door as it flew off and the car’s driver suffered minor cuts.

The driver of the lorry was uninjured in the incident.

Officers were called to the scene shortly before noon and the road remained closed until 2.45pm when the meat had been cleared.

Traffic was diverted from the scene at the White Mare Roundabout near Thirsk and at the top of Sutton Bank.
