Asafe pair of hands, a good pair of lungs and a decent turn of speed must be useful when upholding law and order. And there is no suggestion that the Clifton policing team is deficient in these departments.

What seems clear from their charity football match against York’s Arc Light Centre, however, is that they have no monopoly on such qualities.

Indeed, by beating the police 10-2, the homeless centre side demonstrated they may have what it takes to pound the beat.

Who knows? If enough of them join up, the police might even win a return match.
