ART really is power.

But this is no ordinary modern sculpture that towers over Clifton Moor.

It is a new 50ft tall wind turbine which will slash energy bills for the 47 small and fledgling ventures occupying the 24,000 sq ft two storey Eco Business Centre.

The turbine, just delivered, is the crowning glory of the project undertaken by Ian McAndrew of York developer, the Helmsley Syndicate, and Ian Atkinson, of DSP Architects, Clifton Moor.

They are particularly proud because together they decided to pitch City of York Council with a green, sustainable building, a plan favoured out of 12 expressions of interest.

It was built shortly after the Eco Centre was short-listed in this year’s Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Pro Yorkshire Awards, the result of which should be known next month.

“Isn’t the turbine beautiful?” said Mr McAndrew. “It is the last piece in the jigsaw. It is made by a company called Quietrevolution and because its blades turn horizontally rather than vertically in the wind, it is very quiet.”

But there were worries that the towering turbine would ever arrive, when Lotus Construction, of Otley, which ordered the structure, went into administration in November.

“Fortunately the deposit had been paid so we dealt with Quietrevolution directly, and up went the turbine.”
