ENVIRONMENTALLY-friendly university students trawled York’s river banks in a massive clean-up to rid the area of rubbish.

The York St John students travelled the length of the River Ouse southwards, from Clifton Bridge to the university boat house, collecting as much litter they could find.

Teams of people carried out the collections on the bank while a brave few battled the cold weather and took to Canadian canoes to clean the edge of the river.

The event, run by environmental charity the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers and York St John University, coincided with the Big Tidy Up – the UK’s biggest ever litter tidy up organised by Keep Britain Tidy.

A trust spokesperson said of the day: “Everything went really well, despite the cold, and we had a brilliant turn-out.

“We celebrated the success of the day with a big barbeque at the end for everyone who got involved.”
