Manchester United have lined up York City teenager Adam Boyes as a possible transfer target.

Boyes, 17, has just completed a two-week trial with the Old Trafford giants and is also believed to be interesting fellow Premier League big guns Middlesbrough and Tottenham.

The Lingdale-based forward scored for the Red Devils in a youth tournament that also featured hosts Spurs, Boro, Hibernian and a touring Russian side.

United are yet to follow up their interest with an approach for the City striker, but KitKat Crescent chief Colin Walker confirmed that Boyes had visited the Premier League champions for two weeks' work experience.

Walker said: "There were a couple of times last season when Manchester United scouts watched our youth team as well as the other sides we were playing. In the end, Adam Boyes was invited on a week's experience at Manchester United.

"That turned into two weeks and the second was a tournament which he asked my permission to play in and I gave that. The feedback and vibes have all been very positive but, as it stands, Adam is still a York City player and it's been a fantastic experience for the boy. It's all about an experience for the boy at the moment and hopefully he will still be in my squad next season because you can't buy the experience he's just had."

Boyes is yet to make his full City debut but made four substitute appearances last season with his debut coming in March's FA Trophy semi-final, second leg tie with Torquay.

He also scored a hat-trick for the reserves against Barnsley last month and Walker feels United's tracking of Boyes illustrates the importance of maintaining the club's existing youth structure, with Sir Alex Ferguson having already signed Minstermites Jonathan Greening and Nick Culkin in the past.

An appeal was launched last month by first-team coach driver Colin Swann to meet a £10,000 shortfall in funding and guarantee the continuation of under-18 football at KitKat Crescent next season.

Walker has recruited donations towards that target himself and said: "I set Neil Redfearn on as youth team coach because, like Eric Winstanley and myself, he is a massive believer in youth development and our youth system.

"We saw its success last season in the FA Youth Cup run, some consistent performances in the reserves, the appearances of Andy McWilliams, Liam Shepherd and Adam Boyes in the first team and now the fact that Manchester United are showing an interest in the policy, which they have always kept an eye on."

Could striker Adam Boyes make the grade with a top flight club?

If Adam Boyes is of a standard that interests Manchester United we should give him a chance in the first team next season and his price will soar if he does the business by January, unless however, they are willing to make an offer now that is fair and in the best intrests of the football club

Does anybody know if he is related to Glen Boyes, who scored a record number of goals for Munthorpe in 1971 when they were Yorkshire Schools champions?

It would be great for him to go to a club like united. It would also be great if we could get some much needed cash. It underlines the need to have a youth squad not just for our benefit by bringing players into the first team squad. But also the possible revenue from selling our young stars. Keep up the good work

This is good news for the lad and the club but lets not get carried away. Many York lads have been away at Premiership clubs and come back disappointed - Ross Greenwood a very good example. He was outstanding as an 11-15 year old, he went to Man U and has now been released by City. Give the lad a fairt chance in the City first team then we could have a realistic appraisal of him and we we might get some money for him

Best deal for City would be to sell now in a deal that would inc at least a 30% sell on clause also an £100,000 in a result of an unexpected England call up ater in his carreer likewise a first team debut ( for a premeirship club ) same amount of cash. Also i would have thought a deal could be arranged where we had him on loan at the club for at least a season to gain league experience and fire us back into the football league. Its also no supriseto me that Adam has clearly develeped well under Neil Redferns influnence a superb move by the management team and board .One which a lot of so called City supporters ridculed and scoffed once again these idiots have been proved wrong,we have the best group of youngsters at the club we have had for a long time and a manager in Colin Walker who will give them the oppertunity in the 1st team as he has already seen what they can do in the reserve league.Hopefully Adam will develop into another Cresswell, greening and Murty and get the full backing of the City support unlike Cresswell who got dogs abuse at the at the start of his City carreer, fans have to remember the age of these kids we are bringing through.Booing and abuse at the slightest mistake can ruin a young players confidence although its only a small minourity at York we have a hardcore of fans who do this every season, this ends when the player leaves the club and more often then not has asuccessfull carreer with another club often in a higher league club,Andy Warrington comes to mind.

Not sure. I was asking myself the same question.

Incidentally, that 1971 Nunthorpe GS team were rather more than Yorkshire champions; they went on to win the regional championship, beating a Sunderland school (St Bedes?) 2 - 0 at Roker Park. They eventually lost in the national semis at Stoke. I think the team also included David Fenton, younger son of City legend Billy.

It's good to see one of the youngsters showing promise.I hope a few more can follow suit.It just goes to show how important the youth set-up is,and how it can play a part in our clubs future.

They were knocked out in the last 8 to do the Northumberland champions, 3-2 on a freezing day at a dump in North Newcastle. I was there. The game you refer to at Sunderland went to a third replay. The initial game at Roker park was 2-2 (again, I was there). Then they drew at Nunthorpe, then they drew in Sunderland before beating them back at Nunthorpe.

Correct petethefeet, before we played Bede School Sunderland we beat a school from Carlisle. In the game at Roker Park we were two down and I think, if memory is still intact, Glen Boyes got the equaliser, one of 30+ goals that season.

Be, how on Earth do you figure Boyes' success is down to Neil Redfearn?
Boyes came into the York set-up a couple of years back and his development is far more due to Eric Winstanley and John Stockton, even to Billy McEwan (as he turned the youth set-up round).
Redfearn is a new face and has had little chance to really affect things.

In fact, you'd be as well looking to the influence of Middlesbrough's academy or the lad's other youth team, Lingdale.

Adam's dad is called Ian, and they are Middlesbrough-area, so maybe not. But maybe.

Having been a college with all the youth team players who have but praise for Neal Redfern ,if you look at the progress they have made under redfern since the short period under his reighn.Im sorry but Imp you talking complete garbage about Billy Mcewan turning the youth system around just ask David Stockdale what they thought about Billy Mcewans training methods, and how now under good management he has gone on to sign for a premeirship club Fulham.Granted Eric Winstanley deserves the most credit for the good young crop of youth players we have at the club at present.Surley imp you must see that bring an ex premeirship player who is well respected by all players in the game is a real coup for York City and an excellent example for our current yts squad to learn from, granted Neil Redfern is NOT MANAGER MATERIAL his disastrous spells in charge of Northwich and Halifax underline this but as a youth team coach in my opinion this is the perfect role for him.It shows how thick some York fans were when York had a bad run towards the end of the season and York fans blamed Neil Redfern the bloody youth team boss !!!!!!

Dac. Dunno who you are but "yes", in the first match Glen equalised in the last minutes. I can see it now as plain as then. We then faced a bit of trouble from a lot of local skinheads. Happy times!
Imp states that Adam's dad is Ian, from Middlebrough. Well, maybe not, but I do remember Glen had trials with Middlesbrough.

Last I heard, he was selling cars in York.

Be,
It's a shame that your own attitude immediately has you bracket my post as some form of attack on Neil Redfearn. If you read back through past comments, you'll find I was advocating giving him a chance and trying to explain why his managerial record if irrelevant to his potential success as a youth coach.
I happen to agree he could be very good in that role.

All I was saying is the credit for the development of players like Boyes lies not with a man who has been in charge 4 months, but with the people in charge the 20 months before that.
You'd have to be pig-ignorant not to admit that.

My point about McEwan is that he changed the culture that ran the youth team, getting rid of most of the previous staff and bringing in Winstanley.
The culture within our youth team pre-McEwan was breeding players who wasted their talent (as Stockdale nearly did).
The change in staffing has changed the attitude, and we are reaping the benefits with players like McWilliams, Shepherd and Boyes.
Your point about Stockdale is irrelevant. He came through the previous regime, was a professional by the time McEwan arrived, and was on a downward spiral that necessitated him getting out of the club.

So no garbage at all from me. But a little from you.
Try actually reading and thinking next time.
