Council leader reveals potential stadium site

FORMER City of York Council leader Steve Galloway has revealed that land behind York Racecourse is being considered as a site for a new community sports stadium.

In a Liberal Democrat survey form, aimed at canvassing residents on their opinion about the possibility of selling Huntington Stadium to help fund a new sports venue, Coun Galloway cites land between the former Terry's factory and the College of Law as a potential place to relocate York City and York City Knights.

Coun Galloway, who is now city strategy executive member at Guildhall, has also told The Press that the land, known as Bustardthorpe and accessed from Bishopthorpe Road, is now a frontrunner, along with the previously-publicised site at Nestlé, as the most likely new home for the city's football and rugby league clubs.

He said: "There is the area of land near Nestlé and land close to the racecourse known as Bustardthorpe and, at the moment, they seem to be the most likely locations for a community stadium although other sites have not been discounted. The area to the rear of the racecourse has been raised as a possibility during informal council discussions but no more than that.

"Our reason for mentioning the two sites in the survey distributed to residents in Huntington and the Westfield Ward, was to get across to people that the options will not necessarily be close to Huntington Stadium. I've no strong feelings either way as to where a new community stadium should be but, if you exclude Huntington Stadium, the two areas mentioned are big enough, although the area next to Nestlé is bigger and would offer more opportunities."

As previously reported in The Press, a separate planning issue has brought stadium negotiations with Nestlé to a standstill, meaning Bustardthorpe is now likely to present the football club's preferred home for a new stadium.

York City FC communications and community director Sophie McGill was reluctant to comment on the suitability of the site with auditors having just conducted a report on the club's accounts to be presented to council committee members before the end of the month.

A final decision will then be made on whether the council will takeover the club's annual £138,000 Football Foundation loan repayments and ease the financial burden on the Minstermen until relocation from Bootham Crescent is secured.

McGill said: "A decision has not yet been made regarding the location of the site for the new stadium. We have just completed the forensic accounting procedure with Deloitte and the results of this will soon be submitted to the City of York Council."

Added McGill: "When the Deloitte report has been considered, we very much hope all political parties will vote in favour of proceeding with the community stadium for the city of York.

"We believe a city the size and stature of York deserves a state of the art stadium for professional sport and a facility the community can be proud of."

Outgoing council deputy chief executive Simon Wiles added that talk of potential sites should be regarded as premature and conjecture at this point.

He said: "We're not really concentrating on the site at the moment, we are concentrating on providing support for the football and rugby league clubs.

"We have identified seven sites and there are two that have the best potential but we will concentrate on the sites when we are in a position to provide project management and there will then be ownership, traffic and other issues.

"The auditors' report has been completed and I've produced a summary which will be presented to the council's committee members."

Encouragingly, for City fans, Coun Wiles added: "I haven't identified anything to worry about as yet."

So Councillor Galloway has decided that the best place for an enormous sports stadium is on some very popular allotments in the Green Belt on a busy narrow road. Great! At least it's not in Westfield!

It's hardly an enormous stadium; it would be dwarfed by the nearby racecourse.

I don't think there's any suggestion that it would be on the allotments.

I assume Galloway has revealed the site to try and secure some political advantage for himself and his party, which tends to vindicate Jason McGill's assertion at the Supporters Trust AGM that the issue was being used as a political football.

Everyone else involved has abided by agreements to keep certain issues confidential, but Galloway opens his gob and everyone's suddenly focused on one site that might, or might not prove to be any good.

1) This is still positive news.

2) A junction off the A64 would be needed, and the Highway Authority can get to do that via the planned improvements to the A64. Ok for a shopping center, so ok for a new stadium I'd say.

3) Allotments, who the hell cares apart from a handful of gardeners. Liberal nonsense with the green belt "there's spuds in that land" rubbish.

4) The stadium's size won't matter, so long as it's expandable. We're not filling BC with 10,000 every week, so it's a nothing point at this stage. I know 6,000 is small, but that's an opening plan and likely to be 6,000 seats, so have two terraces, problem solved, then expand if we go up to Div 1 when it has to be seats.

The only thing I would change is the million to athletics relocation. Let them run their socks off at the University. It's a very small element of sports in York, so they do not warrant a million of the proceeds.

Orion, what a selfish attitude. Your preferred sport is about to be subsidised for no good reason that I can see. You talk as though you yourself have a shed load of cash to inject into the project.

Your paragraph 3 is unbelievable, what a rotten selfish viewpoint. No suggestion from you about possible re-location of the allotments; just "throw em off".

Your last paragraph is worse as it targets the youngsters who actually take part in sport. Football has no connection with Huntington Stadium so why is it receiving anything from the proposed sale?

I wonder if you are a agent provocateur
by the damage you do by your post to the goodwill of the citizens of York; but no, you just haven't though it through have you?

If you are a typical supporter of York City then perhaps it would be better if we, the majority of Yorks' citizens, just walked away.

Bustardthorpe? no chance! the gob is just gobbing again. Bishopthorpe Road is congested enough, what do you think is holding up the Terry's developement? Why do football fans think the rest of us should subsidise their sport, its proffessional is'nt it.

Cynical old me, but I remember a story a couple of weeks ago around the concern that the development at the former Terry's site would cause congestion so there was a proposal to add another road - and then we hear that they're thinking of sticking a stadium there!

Could be a good venue is they can get a decent public transport provision to the area which can be used on racedays as well.

I thought there were limitations on what the land could be used for though - the factory development has to fulfil certain criteria.

But, more importantly, can we have a swimming pool please???????

Simon Wiles is a man of many talents but he's not a Councillor. At least not yet.

At last a suggestion given some 3 years ago sees the light of day.
If not the teardrop site , this is the only other practical & worthy solution.
It won't require another junction from the A64 , the current infrastructure suits the races & will football & rugby.
They don't need any of the allotment site There are 2 large enough waste land fields for the ground.
The only objection may come from the YCFC board as they won't be able to continue the stupid practice of playing games when the races are on.
If the council are stumping up for the land , should give the approach of "beggars can't be choosy", the reluctance of Magoo shows that it's not suitable for their empire building plans.
I'd love to see what creative accounting the club have come up with.

this is great news if this is a serious possibility. Finally giving something which locals actually enjoy some attention rather than just for tourits or stag partys going to the races. As previously said the racecourse will dwarf the new ground entirely anyway so no one can have any complaints, especially with the a64 so close by. Plus the whole point of having the ground there is that most people will NOT be in their cars anyway as most will continue to walk/bus as they do to bootham. Its about time something good happened for York citizens rather than for the outsiders. Asaid though, we still want a blummin pool and other facilities that locals can enjoy. For to long we've pandered to the needs of the tourism industry.

not a brilliant idea. when the races are on city & knights will play away. we want a ground with it's own identity and not one to be swallowed up by the race course. i would like to see a stadium up by the bumper castle, theres plenty of space and it is easily accessable.

What a daft bit of political scaremongering.

To begin with, its on green belt, isn't it?
And someone mentioned "waste land" - I don't think it is - the racecourse lease/use part of it for parking (and car boot sales), there's a farmed field, and then the allotments.

And the road is narrow and dangerous enough as it is! More traffic won't help it.

And most importantly, it'll spoil the view ;-)

Is that because it creates circa 10,000 jobs & brings £333mn to the City...? I just wondered.

Because the club does a lot of community work involving schools & colleges... so why wouldn't they be entitled to some help?

brings money to who?
10,00 jobs? are you kidding? you mean york uni and YSJ students in £5 an hour jobs dony you. theres a good reason why the majority of yorkies work outside of York in Leeds/hull/london etc, and its beacuse there are no jobs in York. If you're a student after a part time job great. If you wanna talk about jobs, why not talk about ABB, sugar, terrys, Nestle, which will soon be shut in 3/4 years. Other topwns/cities counsils function perfectly fine without pandering to toursists all the time yet anyone actually from York has to have it thrust in their faces at all times. The only reason the races gets so much attention is because its for out of towners, like geordie stag dos, hence the reason we ended up with a lap dancing club. Its about time those of us born and bred in York actually get something we can enjoy, rather than japenese or american tourits.

Is this land part of Micklegate stray which passed, by local act of parliament in 1907, from the freemen of the City to the City Council, in order to maintain it as an "open space" for the benefit of the people of York?

You might find that the council have somewhat altered that.
One reason why the racecourse has been able to do the following.
1. Put a perimeter fence right around the whole Knavesmire

Something I totally disagree with.

2.Put a tarmac road around the racecourse & across it.

3. They have been allowed to extend the fence to dissect the Knavesmire on a permanent basis.

4. The 'green' council don't give a hoot for the thousands of cars & articulated vehicles on the knavesmire.

Lease or not.
No one is stopping the creep of the Races.
The site of the stadium is not 'green belt' nor can it be if it's a car park.
The benefit will be for the people of York.
The races will hardly effect football, they do that just as well for themselves & it won't touch rugby.

Gateshead are posting a 4 figure sum for Richard Brodie. Which will double should they gain promotion from blue sq north.
Could this be a done deal whilst securing compensation to Huddersfield for Becketts signature.

Reports on Huddersfield message board posted 31 May suggest Luke Beckett has agreed terms with Bradford and will sign when he returns from holiday if no other clubs come in for him. Related posts suggest he has turned down York and is trying to generate interest. Could just be disgruntled Terriers have a moan though. York have apparently turned down an offer for Brodie but Gateshead are expected to return with a higher offer.
