£100k ‘bid’ for Sodje rubbished

YORK City have rejected claims that teenage striker Onome Sodje is set to join Barnsley.

It was reported Sodje, who turns 20 on Thursday, was on his way to Oakwell in a £100,000 deal.

But City communications and community director Sophie McGill insisted there was no truth in the story.

She said: “I can confirm we have not been approached by Barnsley in recent weeks regarding Onome Sodje or any of the York City players.”

While there may not have been “recent” interest in Sodje from South Yorkshire, he caught the eye during an away reserve game against the Tykes back in November, converting two penalties after winning one, hitting the crossbar and seeing a spectacular overhead kick cleared off the line.

Sodje won his place back in the first team and went on to finish the campaign as the club’s joint-top scorer with Martyn Woolford on 17 goals.

The ex-Charlton and Ebbsfleet striker only managed to get on the scorsheet once in his last 13 outings, however, bagging a brace in the 3-2 home defeat against Woking.

He has already opened his account in pre-season with City’s goal in Friday night’s 1-1 draw against Leeds.

Championship side Barnsley have spent £1.9 million over the summer, recruiting Leicester striker Iain Hume, Frenchman Mounir El Haimour and Argentinian midfielder Hugo Robert Colace.

Manager Simon Davey has also been thwarted in attempts to sign strikers Kevin Phillips and Freddie Eastwood.

you'd have to rip their hand off for that wouldn't you? TBH, whilst he's certainly a prospect for the future, I think that Sodge is far from the finished article- I'd take half of that for the short term gain. Imagine what we could get for £50K!

This might have been good business - with a sell on clause.

Sodje is showing good determination and definitely has ability o perform in a higher league. Hopefully he'll score us 15 goals before Christmas!

As long as he keeps scoring after Christmas as well, which was more of the problem last season IIRC

If this turns out to be true, I'd take the 100k and use some of it to bring back Donaldson. Imagine McBreen and Donaldson together, would be awesome. Anyone fancy us for the title this year? Skybet has best odds on us at 33-1.

Indeed

If this turns out to be true, I'll eat my hat, or anyone's hat for that matter. Tell you what, you choose the hat, I'll eat it.. as long as it's not a hard hat, I don't think I could eat one of those

100k ????? ...... It would be about the right money to be fair. Of course with a 25% sell on clause.

I think for sure either way this will be a big season for certain for Sodje. Got to be a 25+ goals season at this level with a decent start to cement his place alongside McBreen.

Can't see Brodie or Faz being much competition for McBreen or Sodje .... why did we keep Faz??

They kept Faz because of his fantastic work rate for the team .If they all show his energy and commitment in the coming season we will be in with a shout

Yet if they all show his finishing ability we'll be up a creek without a paddle. All puff and no product.

Couldn't agree more with Super Alan Fetish, Farrell may run around a lot but his only real purpose is hitting the first defender with a corner.

Considering his poor fitness record last season, I'd have rather Walker sent him packing and drafted in a fresh face.

With respect, the season has not started yet. Lets not do the usual thing and get on the players backs even before the season starts. The guys need confidence, not some armchair pundit pulling them to pieces before the off......

Faz may miss chances but he creates space for others...if he took all his chances he would not be in the Blue Square but playing at a much higher level

Problem: he doesn't.

Faz has been one of my favourite players for a couple of seasons now, real passion and energy ...... but very little end product (exc vs. Farsley!). He could be fantastic or could be what we had last year, i reckon he has til christmas to shine then get farmed out on loan? He reallt has the ability but needs to produce, like Sodje and Wolly do week in week out.

Not that you ever want your players talked about or un-settled but i am hearing Crewe are sniffing around Wolly again .... 150k i here, which is by no means enough

Nuts to that! It's no fun without a bit of ribbing. And I doubt Faz is glued on here, his confidence dwindling as quote number 11 comes up.

It's also worth pointing out that in general even professional pundits tend to be based in armchairs, or at least in variations upon a posterior-perching theme.

...Unless your reference is perhaps to skills of punditry specifically related to household furnishings. For example, 'My office chair's got more swivel than Jane Torvill on speed,' or, 'I've seen more leather in Max Mosley's closet than is on that chaise longue.'
