York City boss angry over controversial Gulls winner

YORK City boss Colin Walker was left seething at referee Paul Curry after a controversial late goal cost his side their unbeaten home record.

Curry allowed Torquay’s stoppage time match-winning goal to stand despite visiting striker Tim Sills appearing to foul Minstermen ’keeper Michael Ingham before the ball fell for Mark Ellis to clinch a 2-1 victory.

Sills appeared to charge into Ingham as the pair competed in the air following Kevin Nicholson’s free-kick and Walker felt his side were unfairly denied a point after Mark Greaves’ 85th-minute header had cancelled out Roscoe Dsane’s second-half opening goal.

The City boss said: “As you can see on the photograph, it’s an absolutely blatant foul on Michael. Probably 151 other referees would have given it but not this one. It was a bit like that all game though. There were lots of decisions that nobody knew why they were given and it’s hard to swallow.”

City left-back Mark Robinson conceded the foul that led to Torquay’s winning goal. He was also shown a yellow card despite protesting his innocence after a challenge on midfielder Tryone Thompson, but Walker felt the City defender should have stayed on his feet, saying: “I was too far away to see if it was a foul or not, but you should stand your ground.”

Substitute Simon Russell had earlier lost possession to Torquay midfielder Chris Hargreaves, who then released Thompson to cross for Dsane to open the scoring midway through the second half.

Russell had only replaced Steven Hogg six minutes earlier, but Walker defended that decision with the former Manchester United trainee making his first league start of an injury- hindered season.

He said: “A couple of individual mistakes cost goals and the people know who they are.

“Steven Hogg did well during the time he was on the pitch. He then came off and Simon Russell came on and lost the ball for their goal so the manager gets vilified.

“The bigger picture is Hoggy is an integral part of the team now but we need to nurture him through. He started to lose his legs and they had three midfield players making massive runs into the box so we put Simon Russell on to try and force one of them back.”

Walker, pictured, admitted that it was a “massive disappointment” not to prevent in-form Torquay enjoying a seventh successive win and added: “I thought we got the tactics right and they changed their shape four times in the game.

“They paid us massive respect by playing a back three. Bruce Dyer and Onome Sodje caused them all sorts of problems and the ’keeper made some good saves, while other shots were also blocked.

“Half-time probably came too soon for us and, as has been the case recently, we took some time to get going in the second half. We should have then been thankful and seen the game through to the end when Greavesie scored but that didn’t happen.”

• City’s trip to Weymouth, scheduled for January 3, has been switched to Tuesday, January 6 (7.45pm) to allow for live coverage on Setanta.

I think blaming the ref is missing the point a little.

We just don't look like scoring, and if you are 1-1 with ANY time left on the clock, you can't count on it finishing that way.

I keep going week after week, trying to justify the cost of the season ticket. I am constantly thinking that I really could find something better to do with my time and money.

Col - Pick a team and STICK WITH IT. The constant changing isn't going to help any of the players form a bond, especially the strikers.

Do you just roll a pair of die each week: "2 and 5 - Sodje and Dyer"

We have a tough run of games now, pick a team, and stick to it, or you will see the gate dropping week by week. (How on earth there were 2400 there I don't know)

You can also see on the picture that there is a subtle lack of City players helping Michael out.

I can not make it to games as I'm working but I also read far too often that poor discipline is costing us - ie time & time again we are giving STUPID free kicks away. Normally same players too...

CW please play 442

Its not just the strikers (who have to create their own chances at the moment)

Its all about our midfield creating chances for our forwards and for that we need two wide players

Please drop the 3rd centre bac and play

INGHAM

PURKISS
MCGURK
PARSLOW
ROBINSON

RUSSELL (LW)
GREAVES
HOGG
FARRELL(RW)

SODJE
DYER

You could play Hogg on the left wing with Russell on the right and bring in ether Wilko or Henderson

Or play shepherd on the left wing and play Hogg in the middle with Greaves....

Just please change to a 442, how can you play 532 at home ! So negative !

Once again we played 7 natural defenders (including Ingham in goal) resulting in no urgency or ability to attack for all but ths first ten and last ten minutes. Plenty of decent individual performances (I thought Hogg's passing was excellent,Kelly solid at the back), but the defensive tactics mean no meaningful attacks for long periods of the game. I have got to most matches that work/family/finances would permit since 1969, watching poor teams, great teams and everything in between. I like most of the current squad but am finding it difficult to raise the enthusiasm to watch what's on offer from my beloved club at the moment. ps.blaming the referee for the result is laughable.

It was a tackle from behind so definately a free kick, and Ingham just missed judged the ball (hence him lying flat on the ground afterwards and not chasing after the ref).

Yes, it is strange that individually the players are OK but as a team it is extremely frustrating.
A year ago they did the pre and post match 'huddle' but not now. The spirit has gone in many of them.
The fact that there were no defenders on the bench (ie they were all on the pitch) indicates a lack of belief in the system. If one of the defenders (incuding full backs)had got injured then the system would have had to have changed straightaway.
Colin has lost it big time. Most of the match was so boring people were just talking among themselves bout the weather and stuff.

Whether City were 'robbed' of a point by the referee or not does not hide the fact that they were turgid throughout.

What is disappointing is that Torquay, who are second, were not that much better than us. The only real difference between the two teams was that their midfield were more dynamic, while our three at times could have been covered by a blanket.

I have no issue playing 3-5-2 provided you make sure you get bodies forward - once again we've relied on a set piece to get a goal. We have plenty of bodies in this squad but too many players who are all alike.

HTC - The strike force since Dyer arrived has been consistent. It's been the same for two matches.

iandwightbenton - 442 won't work, we don't have a natural left-winger bar the light-weight youth player Shepherd. 532 isn't a negative system if you use the right players in the right way, and it's the best shape for us.

tallyorkist - I'm pretty sure Ingham is a natural keeper, not defender...

Surely time must be running out for Walker, does he really know whats going on.

Players brought in on loan not played
Rothery, Hirst

Players brought in not seen recently
Henderson

Youngsters not tried
Boyes, McWilliams, Shepherd

Currently our most prolific striker (goals per game) Brodie (I know not everyone's favourite player) scoring elsewhere.

Look at the comparable records when McEwan was sacked.
Walker p18 pts 23 pos 15
mcewan p19 pts 21 pos 21

We are fortunate that we are playing in very average league, that our position is better than this time last season.

Walker obviously can't motivate the players to give their best.
I think we have good players but they are not comfortable with the constant positional changes and tactics that Walker employs.

One or two shots on target per match is simply not good enough.

Sack him now Jason

Sorry league position when Billy was shown the exit door was 19th.

If results fail to go our way tomorrow we will be 20th.

Walker should have been sacked after Saturday, and comparing his record with Billy's confirms that he should be sacked NOW.
Anyway anything less than three points, a convincing performance and some entertainment and Walker definately has to go before the Crawley match.

I agree with the comments regarding the controversial winning goal for Torquay - That was debateable, but what was not debateable was the downright poor performance by York City. We are all very quick to crucify Colin Walker for his negative tactics, and I include myself in this for I can not defend some of his actions. But lets be honest the players are the ones out on the pitch, and it is them who win or lose the game. A lot of those players got Billy McEwan the sack after a string of dissapointing results, the same players then responded to the change of Manager and went on a winning run. Unless I am completely off the mark the same players will probably get Colin Walker the sack. Should we really be looking at the honesty of the players for I sincerely believe that some of them are just going through the motions when they put on the shirt. York City are one of the best supported clubs in the Blue Square Premier and we deserve better than this.

Dave Smith, you need to do your research a little better. Sorry to have to correct you, but Rothery and Hirst aren't on loan, they are contracted permanent signings.

Hirst is a back-up for Purkiss so can't be expected to be in the first-team.

Rothery is re-building his career after serious injury, so will take time to come through.

Henderson has had fitness problems and has only just come back into the reserves.

Shepherd is lightweight and not ready for the first team, Boyes has only just stepped up from the youth team, needs to be nurtured. McWilliams is the only one to make an argument for, and there's not much to pick between him and Robinson at the moment.

I agree with the other points.

the whole shape of the team looked good when peter holmes played at Stevenage and in other games. Any chance of him back in window?

Also do we practice one-on-ones in training as Sodje and Farrell seem incapable of finishing in match conditions.

If anyone wanted a measure of just how abyssmal we are right now, it could be this. Altrincham have been relegated in each the past god knows how many seasons, only to be rescued by someone going bust or having points deducted. They are now three places above us!!!

To be simple we are shocking the amount of times i have stormed out of games this season due to poor tactical errors by colin its disgraceful when we have had all possesion. He just needs to pick a system and a consistent 11 and be a little more harsh, He does have the backing of all us fans he just needs to be a little more wise tactically and gain a more attacking approach to be in the top 6 by christmas as he said or yes he is out!

Fanny Batter, Leeds says...
10:57am Tue 18 Nov 08

Re TomWheatland9,- He doesn't have my backing and never really has done and jugdging by all the posts recently many more fans have the same feelings. Lets face it he is tactically inept
The confused players are going onto the pitch with no game plan with one or two lads which shouldn't be on the pitch.
Again Russell lost the ball for their first goal. What a surprise! This lad cannot go past a player, and always takes the easy option laying the ball off. He endlessly loses posession when we are (trying) to go forward. For the city hardcore of fans, if he does play on Sunday, closely watch him and see how many times he:
a - goes past a player and
b- gives away possession.
Also was there a man of the match announcement on Sat? or did I miss something - not there should have been one, they were so bad.

Imp

Thanks for putting me right over Rothery and Hirst.

I appreciate that Boyes is still young and needs to be integrated into the team, but the odd 8minutes every third game is hardly a way to break him into the team.

What happened to if your good enough your old enough which seemed to work well in days gone by.

I agree with others that the players also need to take a look at themselves, but I suspect they are totally confused at what Colin is asking them to do.

Agree with the need to have Holmes back.

See you all at Cambridge tonight for more enjoyment.
