Golden girl Hayley Turner, who last week made history by becoming the first female jockey in Britain to ride 100 winners in a year, makes her first appearance of 2009 tomorrow and can pick up where she left off.

The 26-year-old riding sensation, who has broken down numerous barriers for women riders – in 2006 she became the first female to become champion apprentice when she tied for the championship with Saleem Golam – heads to Kempton with good prospects of riding a double.

Turner teams up with Aeroplane in the digibet.com Handicap and has every chance of riding this Simon Callaghan-trained six-year-old, just as she did over this course and distance in the closing days of 2008 when he became her 96th success en route to her famous century.

A 6lb penalty may not be enough to halt Aeroplane from obliging again.

Callaghan also supplies Turner with another potential winner in Andean Margin in the Panoramic Bar And Restaurant Handicap.

Successful at Southwell two starts back, Andean Margin has since gone down by only a neck to Trusted Venture at Great Leighs. He can return to winning ways for Turner, who is sure to be the focus of continued media attention as she launches her 2009 campaign.

Shaded Edge, narrowly beaten by Marmooq on this course ten days ago, can take his revenge in the digibet Handicap.

David Arbuthnot’s charge went down by a length and a quarter last time, but Marmooq carries a 6lb penalty tomorrow, which may be enough of a burden to hand the advantage to Shaded Edge.

The nap selection is awarded to Joe Jo Star, who is in action at Wolverhampton.

On his first start for Malton trainer Richard Fahey last month, this cheaply-purchased gelding won with any amount to spare in a handicap hurdle at Musselburgh.

A four-times winner at Wolverhampton, he will not be inconvenienced by returning to the all-weather Flat course tomorrow and, racing off a lowly mark of 49, will surely be very hard to beat in the wolverhampton-racecourse.co.uk Handicap.

Michael Wigham is a dab hand at rejuvenating cast-offs from other stables and the Newmarket trainer – a former Malton-based jockey – bids to strike while the iron is hot with River Kirov in the William Hill January Sale Handicap.

Wigham has placed River Kirov to gain two quick wins lately at Kempton and Lingfield. He now has to show his effectiveness at a different venue, and under a whopping 12lb penalty, but he is in such great heart that only the brave and the foolish will be rushing to oppose him.
