ACOMB’S Chris Thompson beat former BDO world darts number one Gary Anderson in the Blue Square UK Open Scottish regional qualifier.

Fellow York thrower John Quantock also claimed a ten-dart finish at the Irvine venue, while the pair’s Crescent WMC team-mate Martyn Turner defeated world number 30 Alex Roy on his way to a Scottish Players’ Championship third round appearance.

Last year’s UK Open quarter-finalist Thompson enjoyed a 6-3 victory over Anderson, who was playing his first weekend as a PDC player.

Earlier, York’s “Hitman” had beaten Dyson Parody 6-1 but he missed out on a last 16 place by the narrowest of margins after losing on the deciding leg to world number 16 Colin Osborne, who went on to reach the semi-finals.

Turner lost 6-1 in the first round to former World Matchplay champion Colin Monk, while Quantock bowed out 6-2 at the same stage to Jamie Caven.

Both fared better during the Scottish Players’ Championship on the previous day when Quantock checked out in a terrific ten darts during his unlucky 6-5 second round defeat to world number 11 Alan Tabern, having earlier defeated Ian Jobling 6-3.

Turner overcame Garry Spedding (6-2) and Roy (6-5) before going down 6-1 to world number 19 Denis Ovens in the third round.

World number 58 Thompson fell at the first hurdle, losing 6-2 to world number seven Adrian Lewis.

Scottish number one Robert Thornton won both tournaments, beating Yorkshire legend Dennis Priestley on both occasions.

Turner now stands 85th in the PDC order of merit while Quantock is ranked 104.
