MARTYN Turner’s bid for a first-ever PDC title was ended by 14-time world darts champion Phil Taylor at the Brentwood Centre.

The Clifton Hotel ace charged into the last 16 of the latest Players’ Championship regional qualifier and took a leg off the legendary “The Power” Taylor before bowing out 6-1.

Turner had earlier defeated former UK Open finalist Vincent van der Voort 6-5, 2008 World Championship runner-up Kirk Shepherd 6-3 and world number 27 Wayne Jones 6-5 on his way to pocketing a £400 cheque from his fourth round appearance.

In the Blue Square UK Open South-East regional qualifier, Turner succumbed at the first hurdle, however, to World Championship quarter-finalist Paul Nicholson 6-1.

Acomb’s Chris Thompson saw his progress halted by two of the game’s greatest players.

World number five Terry Jenkins overcame Thompson 6-4 in the Players Championship event while Adrian Lewis, ranked seventh, knocked the “Hitman” out of the UK Open contest 6-3.

Thompson overcame John MaGowan (6-3) before meeting Jenkins and had to fend off challenges from Andy Relf (6-2) and 1994 World Matchplay champion Larry Butler (6-5) ahead of his third round exit to Lewis.

Fellow York thrower John Quantock lost both his opening games to Ricky Williams (6-5) and John Michael (6-2).
