YORK City boss Colin Walker is keeping his fingers crossed that striker Daniel McBreen will be fit for the Minstermen’s trip to Torquay United tomorrow.

The Australian forward missed City’s 1-1 draw with Barrow after waking up on Sunday with a sore knee, and Walker explained the KitKat Crescent club were taking no chances with the fitness of the former St Johnstone forward.

McBreen scored City’s equaliser against Histon and it was his deflected shot which led to City levelling the scores at Northwich last Saturday.

City have been treating the 31-year-old with kid gloves after he arrived at KitKat Crescent in the summer having recently had knee cartilage surgery.

And Walker said it was that knee which had been causing McBreen some minor trouble over the weekend. But the City boss reckons he should be in the mix at Plainmoor.

“Daniel got a knock in the last five minutes against Northwich,” he said. “It wasn’t a problem after the game but it developed into a problem when he woke up (the next day).

“We just had to not risk him. He had an operation in the summer and we have just got to be careful. I think 24 hours will tell us whether he travels or not, but I think he will be okay.”

Walker remains pleased with City’s undefeated Blue Square Premier record this season.

Only Kettering, aside from the Minstermen, are yet to taste defeat in the league, but he said his side must get smart against teams who come to KitKat Crescent looking to frustrate.

“Undefeated sounds good,” he added. “I think a lot of teams now see the way we play and will come and do what teams have come here to do.

“Against Wrexham we kept a clean sheet and we have just let a sloppy goal in now and again. We have got to put away our chances at the other end.”
