York City boss refuses to defend players after Cambridge defeat

YORK City boss Colin Walker admitted there was no defence for his players after a disappointing 1-0 defeat at Cambridge United last night.

A bizarre Ben Purkiss own goal sealed his side’s fate at the Abbey Stadium and the Minstermen have now won three of their last 17 Blue Square Premier fixtures.

Cambridge had only won one of their previous six matches but secured maximum points despite only forcing City ’keeper Michael Ingham into two saves all evening.

A disappointed Walker said: “I can’t defend anybody. I tried to change shape to get them all going, but it was quite difficult.

“I think it’s only the second time this season that I can say it was a poor team performance and the other team were better than us.

“I’m big enough to say that and the players have got to pick themselves up for a tough game against Crawley on Sunday.”

The result will put more pressure on Walker’s position as manager of the club, but the City chief added: “I work as hard as I can and I know it’s my team, so I take the flak. That’s the job I get paid for.

“I have belief in my own and the players’ ability and I have to pick the team and get it ready for Sunday. Hopefully, I will do that and see what happens.”

About Purkiss’ inadvisable attempt at a chested back pass for the crucial own goal, Walker said: “He does that regularly in games and people think it’s brilliant, but we’ve suffered from an individual decision again.

“He should have just headed it clear.”

Veteran striker Bruce Dyer failed to make last night’s squad due to injury, but Walker will hope to have him back in contention for Sunday’s KitKat Crescent clash with Crawley.

He said: “Bruce had a tight hamstring on Sunday morning and he did not play as a precautionary measure.”

With the boards history, it's surely a given that CW's replacement should he get the boot would be Neil Redfearn, can I ask who the contributors to this site would rather between Walker, Redfearn or Winstanley?? And no getting out of it by suggesting someone else lol. I live in fear.

That's great Col, turn on the players, that will really work...

Change the system, change the personnel and take responsibility.

No more of this toothless formation.

I too believe we have some decent players, capable of doing better, that's your job to sort out and this system is NOT WORKING!!!

CW "I’m big enough to say that"

Well done Col !

We are all fed up with this rubbish

CW OUT

Denis Smith/John Ward In

Denis Smiths family live in York so this would be a nice little job for him and he has millions of contacts in the game so our new players might be a little better !!

If CW is still in the job on Saturday he has to play 442 !

7 defensive minded outfield players, 3 attacking minded outfield players. What do you expect??

speaks99- I know that the board can sometimes take the p1ss out of the fans, but I really doubt that someone who was as deeply unpopular as Redders (false league position?) would be given anything more than a caretaker role.

The 5:3:2 formation does not work because the full backs cannot do it, they are not good enough wing backs but they are (usually) adequate full backs. With Greaves in midfield then, no matter how good the other 4 players are, we are simply not going to score enough goals. There is always the chance to concede a goal either by a player or official error at this level.
This has been the case all season and Colin does not deserve to be manager for one more game if he cannot see it.
In a time of recession football crowds tend to go up so that people can escape their woes for a couple of hours, and hopefully get a pick me up from the entertainment provided. If the City board can make the right change now, then they can tap into this and the crowds will go up over Christmas and in 2009. The decision will pay for itself within months.

Mr Mcgill please do the right thing and replace Colin now. He may be a good No2 but sadly he just is not up to the job.
It's not too late to turn things around.

If, as Walker says, this was only the second time this season the other team was better than us, then surely we should be third in the league? Or at least somewhere higher than 15th? I have seen far more than two poor performances this year. Absurd statement.

Alan F - it is just another example of his failure to accept reality and recognise our weaknesses. If he can't even see them, how can he sort them out??

He has to go - NOW! What are the McGills waiting for? He's had his chance, and the result is negative tactics leading to the most boring football I have ever witnesses, which seems to be a view widely shared.
He is killing us, wasting talent, were going nowhere other than further down the table with a manager who seemingly has no interest in winning football matches.

WALKER OUT NOW!

Walker also admits that he found it difficult to get the players to change shape, and to get them going. Which, to be frank, is pretty much his job. Now, if you can't do your job...

If Colin is shown the door (hopefully very soon)who is there to take over the reigns.

Not Neil Redfearn.

My personal choice would be to approach Lee Sinnott who did wonders at Farsley Celtic (3 promotions in 4 years with no money at all) and knows the non league scene very well. Unfortunately for him circumstances didn't work out for him at Port Vale but his management credentials speak for himself.
Any comments??

Ive had enough of Walkers lame excuses. He needs to do the right thing now for the club , team, fans and city and leave NOW. If not we are going to have a relegation battle on our hands.
As the vast majority of fellow supporters are saying : WALKER OUT BEFORE ITS TOO LATE.

Self-deluding, epitomy of mediocrity, when eventually shaken out of his denial he blames others. Colin Walker IS Willy Lomas. (See Death of a Salesman, York Theatre Royal). Perhaps we could trade him for that George Costigan from "Rita Sue and Bob Too" who's playing Willy. At least he'd be able to act the part of a good manager.

But why not Neil Redfearn? Don't go on the past.

He cannot be worse than the FAT Useless Controller. IMPOSSIBLE.

Jason asked the 'Butler' to design the wiring and install it for the Mansion when the useless one was asked to take over the club from Billy.

I see Brodie scored again last night. Does that make him Yorks highest goal scorer this season?

And he's been "rewarded" with another months loan at Barrow, whilst our current strikers, who couldn't hit a barn door in this form, get to "entertain" us fans.

CW must go. hate to have to join the mob baying for his head, up to now I've kept out as I haven't seen the games, but the stats don't lie. If you're short of confidence forwards, then bring back one on loan who is scoring at a rate of over one every two games in the same league - it is that simple isn't it??

I agree we need more creativity from midfield, but 7 defensive minded players out of 10 outfield players doesn't shout goals galore to me.

Time for CW to go, even if it does mean Redders coming in.

Sorry Colin, time to go. Am fed up with watching a side with about as much excitment as a cheap garden firework. The club and supporters want to watch a proper display.
