You know how fisherman's tales are prone to exaggeration? Well with no word of a lie the Fish York caught on Sunday night was a monster. He must be 13'6" if he's an inch, even if he'll only admit to being 6'5".

The only thing bigger than the man's physical presence was his personality – and armed with much wit and charm he engaged and delighted his assembled shoal of supporters.

In York as part of an extensive tour to promote his latest album 13th Star, Fish jested his way through some good stuff, including Circle Line, Zoe 25, Manchmal and Dark Star. Square Go is also an interesting track, touching on dark areas of his mind, but the hidden gem on the album is Arc Of The Curve, which is a really well crafted song on many levels, and better than the compulsory hits of Kayleigh and Lavender from the Marillion days that were obviously well received.

In the middle of the set Fish chose to swim against the tide with a cover that went completely away from the ‘Genesis with attitude’ sound that sums up 13th Star.

That song was Faith Healer, a Harvey/McKenna masterpiece, and it gave the Big Fin the opportunity to literally invade the audience and lay his scaly mitts on his followers.

This gig was testament to why we should all go and see more live music. The new album at face value is capable of passing you by unnoticed as a collection of ballads labelled and forgotten under suburban rock, but Mr. Fish is rich in much more than Omega 3, and once you've seen and heard the man behind the moniker it will be you, and not the Fish, that will end up being hooked.
